The Waggon and Horses dates back to the sixteenth century, it is recognised as a listed building with a traditional thatched roof and exquisite dormer windows which makes it a building of great importance; Charles Dickens himself mentioned the building in his novel 'Pickwick Papers'. The shingle walls of this ancient waggoners' inn are built from smashed stones from the nearby Avebury Ring, Europe's biggest Neolithic stone circle; the inn makes a perfect spot for visiting the ring and enjoying a meal and good ale. The inn is full of character with beamed ceilings, beautiful flagstones and a large open fireplace, where real ales, lagers and wines are available. GOOD FOOD AND DRINK The waggon and Horses offers an excellent home cooked menu, wide-ranging and delicious with wines from around the globe to complement your meal. A comprehensive choice of daily specials on the blackboard enhance the printed menu. The Waggon represents great value in a traditional setting. ACCOMMODATION The Waggon and Horses offers a self contained apartment which will accommodate a family of up to four. The apartment comprises 1 double bedroom, bathroom with shower, lounge with a double sofa bed, and a fully fitted kitchen area. With it's own private entrance and ample parking it is an ideal place to stay if visiting the many places of historical interest such as Bowood House, the National Trust village of Lacock, the Avebury stone circle and the picturesque town of Marlborough.
