Called into the Crown Stirrup on 28th May this year. Booked by my daughter who now lives down that neck of the woods as she had heard good reports about it. First and foremost I, and my wife, enjoy our food and although I don't expect a banquet I DO expect a certain standard {especially as they know how to charge down there} I had fish and chips and my wife had the hunters chicken. I specifically asked {as I always do in any eating establishment}Do you serve REAL chips? and as usual the answer was the same "yes" and as usual I got bland oven chips as opposed to someone actually peeling a spud, slicing it into chips and deep frying them {THOSE ARE REAL CHIPS AND THEY WOULDN'T TAKE ANY LONGER TO DO} They must have run out of plates as our meals were served on, what can only be described as fancy cheese boards, that may be ok for people that like to see spaces in between food on plates or think it's trendy, but I don't. As for my wife she enjoyed her meal apart from the sweet potato chips that were overdone. All in all I would rate my meal five out of ten, my wife rated hers seven out of ten. We would rate the overall visit to the pub a six out of ten. Before the staff pat themselves on the back I leave you with this. The highest mark I have ever given to any eating establishment [ten out of ten] was the Bulls Head at Little Hucklow in the Derbyshire Dales [sadly no longer open] anyone reading this who had ever eaten there will know exactly what I'm talking about. A wonderful pub. Only stopped in for a pint and ended up staying for dinner, more pints and pudding until closing time. Exceptionally friendly landlord and staff and cracking food. Very well kept beer and plenty of suggestions of what we might like to try as our next drink (don't mention the marmite!)Plenty of games to keep us occupied on a chilly January afternoon/evening. Many thanks and hope to return in the not too distant future.[Report for Removal] Louise Bratton

I was walking on my own with my dog when I came to the crown stirrup atthe start of september. The landlord was extremely welcoming to both and my large hairy dog. The pub had a really warm atmosphere and the food was really good. The staff were pleasant and the service good, they even brought my dog biscuits on a plate. I would have really loved to have stayed for another pint but had to get back to my friends. I had a lovely time when i was at the crown stirrup and would certainly visit it again.[Report for Removal] Laura

We came here for a roast sunday lunch and have to say it was a completely vile meal - the only good thing was that the portions were so small there wasn't much to suffer through. Everything was cold, the meat was dry and not even chicken breast was served (just a couple of bony legs) and we each got just one roast potato and a boiled new potato! The veg was really unimaginative and overcooked, with a small amount of bland tasting gravy. Considering the meal wasn't cheap, the standard was appalling. We will not be coming back here again!![Report for Removal] Jamie

As soon as i entered this pub i could tell that it was a nice warm welcoming atmosphere. personally i would have to say that the attitude portrayed by the employees and the manager were very good. but most of all i feel that the loveley down to earth manager John was the person who made it feel best. thanks to all the staff for a wonderful day[Report for Removal] Peter Birch

My wife and I visited The Crown Stirrup for lunch today and had a lovely meal. I opted for the sea bream which was delicious and freshly cooked. My wife had the duck and was just as pleased. Great selection of ales and served at the correct temperature and nice wines too. Would recommend, definately coming back![Report for Removal] mike henry

My family and I where on a day trip to the new forest, taking in one of the many cycle routes available. It was suggested that we take lunch at the Crown and Stirrup during our journey. I would have to say that the service was not the best after being served with dirty glasses, not the end of the world you may think. The children decided that they would like chicken nuggets and chips and at first all was well, but at further inspection my daughter realised that there were bugs in the chips and they appeared to have been fried at the same time as the chips, a shock I am sure you would agree. After complaining to the manager and expecting at the very least a refund for my daughter’s lunch, we were told that it was fruit flies situated within the vinegar bottle. We received no refund and the manager was not phased and put the vinegar bottle back on the table. I would rather eat from the skips at the nearest campsite, what a shambles.[Report for Removal] Danny Gard

Since moving to the New Forest 5 years we have been looking for a traditional local to proudly call our own. Well at last we have found it. Clve and Lorraine provide such a warm attentive welcome to locals and new visitors alike. The wonderful atmosphere is helped by the traditional pre-requisites of oaked beams, flagstones and an open fire place. The real ales are well kept and properly poured. The Specials Board really does change daily and freshly prepared meals can be eaten in the bar , restaurant or beer garden. The Puddings are most definitely home made and to die for and just like the one's your Mum used to make. If you go here once you will find it very hard not to return. Bruce and Carol's comments above are completely inaccurate but fortunately it looks like they have found a pub that suits their particular tastes up the road ( Oak Inn ) [Report for Removal] PETER and KAREN

Maybe we visited on a bad day, but this pub does not try very hard to make you want to come back. You have to ask for absolutely everyting at the bar when it's commonplace elsewhere to be offered (ice, slice, type of glass etc). Food was poor, and I would question the "home-made" tag, coupled with cutlery and plates that should have been more thoroughly washed before being given to diners. Service was "OK". Garden has seen better days. Could be a good destination if a bit more effort was made.[Report for Removal] Bruce and Carol
