| To be honest I haven't been there in years as I now live in Jakarta but like most of Beaulieu it is well worth a visit. I was googling this pub and found this web site so thought you may be interested in the Pubs history. The Echo wrote a review some time back and gave it the thumbs up. My interest is that my 3xGGrandfather, a Joseph GILES had given up Farming in Dorset and became the Landlord of the Royal Oak Pub on Hill top Beaulieu Here's an extract from Soton's Echo: "Built in 1848, it was originally a saddler's and blacksmith's and did not become the Royal Oak until 1852. Two reminders of the past are the pub's resident ghosts - a man wearing a grey military uniform and a figure in black who appears only at night. Prince Andrew once popped into the Royal Oak during a break from a Royal Navy training course at Seafield Park, Hill Head." CHRIS YANDELL (reporter) Joseph GILES died in 1882... I wonder if he's one of the ghosts? I've rated it fairly good from my memory. I miss the Olde Worlde Pubs and love historic buildings, especially those that provide liquid refreshment. | After a pleasant morning in the Forest we chose to lunch at The Royal Oak, not a place we had been to before, sadly unlikely to go to again. I ordered filleted sea Bass on a bed of crispy leaks. The leaks were different I suppose, but just too like grass to look at and difficult to eat practically. I thought that almost £10 was too much to pay for a very small single fillet of fish. It did come with vegetables which overall were below what you might expect, potatoes,overcooked, broccoli, overcooked and slightly undercooked carrots. the swede was OK though. My husband chose the Hungarian goulash and found it lifeless! The service was friendly although the pub itself was a bit tatty, we sat outside and that area was acceptable, my main disappointment was the food and the cost. A disappointing experience. | A beautiful pub full of character. Fantastic menu from Ham Baguettes to Bison and Kangaroo Burger! We enjoyed two ploughmans, a jacket with crayfish tails plus a portion of fries for under £25. All portions are huge and the food was of excellent standard. My partner is a chef and very picky but even he was impressed by the very thick slices of ham and lovely salads well presented. A lovely garden is available for those with kids and the staff are very friendly. Toilets clean and lots of parking. Go there!
