| Just off the centre of Pennington Village you can find the pleasant, friendly and well-run free house that is The Musketeer. Behind the mock-Tudoresque exterior resides a comfortably cosy interior, boasting some interesting pew-like seating for the window-seat tables. New owners and management have brought a new lease of life- the landlord and landlady are polite, welcoming, and, it seems, always good-humoured. The pub serves Ringwood Best and the stronger FortyNiner, alongside (most of the time) two or more guest ales (the new management appear eager to get back into CAMRA's good books after the previous regimes' period of slippage) as well as Kronenburg and Fosters lagers, two draft ciders, John Smiths and, of course, Guinness, as well as a good selection of bottled beers, soft drinks, and a fair range of the stronger spirits. Despite the pub's name, observant visitors to the bar might notice a discrete Naval influence! Home-cooked meals, soups and sandwiches are available around lunchtime. Live music is making something of a comeback; check the notices on the walls for details. A general knowledge quiz takes place each Tuesday from 20:30, and the Pub participates in local Darts competitions. There is a function / darts room available on the ground floor, reassuringly close to the bar! There are no video games, no games tables and no juke-box; make no mistake, this is very much a traditional pub. However, the visitor will find a friendly atmosphere, with a diverse group of local (and, often, vocal) 'regulars' discussing the issues of the day and testing the quality of The Musketeer's wares! The new management intend to explore the possibility of covering some televized sports events without compromising the pub's character. In summary- a good place for a quick mid-day meal; an even better place for a slow drink or three. Friendly staff, friendly, diverse regulars. The owners / management are welcoming, competent people who seem eager to increase community participation and to build a successful future for the Musketeer.
