| Having heard good reports we thought we would try The Royal Oak Paley Street. I am a Michael Parkinson fan which was also a factor when choosing this restaurant. We arrived and had drinks at the bar. I ordered a vodka with lemonade which was put in a half pint glass and filled to the top with lemonade. Needless to say I couldn't taste the vodka so had another put in. I expected the bar person to take this on board but no, the next time I ordered I got exactly the same drink so I had to order another vodka. The next time I got wise and order a vodka and a glass of lemonade, admittedly by the forth drink the bar person had caught on and gave me a jug of lemonade. Had the meal been a success none of that would have mattered. We were a party of 4, two had the crab, one the rabbit and my husband had the mussels to start. Having eaten mussels in hundreds of restaurants throughout the world I guess he has a good idea of what the should taste like. He felt they weren't cooked so summoned the waiter who told him that there was nothing wrong with the mussels but that he would talk to the chef. My husband said fine but if that is the way you serve then here please don;t bring me anymore as I find them unpleasant. 5 minutes later along comes another bowl of mussels. The waiter told my husband that the chef said there was nothing wrong with the first batch that is how we serve them here, but here is another serving. My husband tasted them, they were exactly the same with an undercooked slimy taste so he left them. When our main meals arrived, three of the party order the plaice. My husband being one of them. I ate most of mine and enjoyed it very much, except for the wider end of the plaice was not cooked it was still clear not white like it should be. As we had had no joy with the mussels I decided it was better to just leave it and say nothing. When the bill came we were a little suprised to see the mussels appear as most restaurants of this "calibre" would have removed the charge. As we were driving home we started discussing the food and I mentioned that the end of my plaice was inedible as it wasn't cooked and the other female in the party said neither was hers, and felt the same as I that it would have been pointless to mention it as the waiter and chef were not interested in our opinion, so she left hers as I had done. All in all the experience of eating at the Royal Oak in Paley street is not one we are likely to repeat.[Report for Removal] | Helen Beck Maidenhead Berkshire |
