| I am the landlady of this pub. In June this year, I was made aware of this web site by one of my customers. At that time there were reviews on it made by Matt Stevenage (which have been duplicated) and Harry W Henlow. I complained about these remarks as I feel they are both inaccurate and offensive and, in August, the Director of this site agreed to remove them. As this has still not been done, I would like to put my own comments on. Since taking this pub on in September 2007 my partner and I have spent thousands of pounds turning it around and making it welcoming and family orientated. We have never tolerated drugs and would take a hard line on anyone caught using them on our premises. Our locals are lovely people and are very offended by the remarks made by Harry W. I know that people are entitled to their opinion, but I do feel these comments are vindictive. I am appalled that this site allows such comments to be added without any form of vetting. If I had not been made aware of this, anyone looking up information regarding our pub/restaurant/hotel would have formed a terrible opinion of us. | Being the brother of the landlady, my opinion of the Bird in Hand will probably be considered biased, but two reviews below are so malicious and untrue that I feel inclined to write something here. I live in Germany and whenever I am visiting in England I love helping out behind the bar because the atmosphere and the people there are so friendly. All the regulars know each other like a big family and strangers are equally welcomed and quickly integrated. The special evenings, - quiz night, karaoke etc, - are exceptionally well-attended, the whole pub taking part or singing along. The landlords, Libby and Doug, are intent on building up a family pub and tolerate no drugs of any sort. They have invested huge sums of money in re-designing the restaurant and getting the garden suitable for kids. The food in the restaurant is good, and should there ever be anything not up to standard, the staff are quick to rectify the problem. I also find it difficult to understand the complaint of the man who says he stayed for over £100. Firstly, the rooms are the most reasonably priced in the area and, secondly, the Bird doesn't even offer a cooked English breakfast. It almost seems he is mistaking the Bird in Hand with another pub. Anyway, I know I always look forward to helping out there, although I am on holiday when in England. I admire what Doug and Libby have achieved since taking over the pub under a year ago. | A few years ago this pub wouldnt have been the place to bring my children but the The Bird In Hand is like a completely new pub! The beer garden is fantastic and swings and slides have been provided for the children to play on. The service was great and the barmaids helped carry my drinks outside. I can now also bring the family dog down (tied up of course) and the bar staff supplied my dog with a bowl of water without me having to ask. Its a great place to bring the kids and the bar snack menu catered for all of us. It was a great day out and a pub I will always bring my family to on those sunny days. | I am a bit dissapointed in one of the comments that has been left for this pub. The Bird In Hand has turned around so much since it has become under new management and the effort that has gone in to create a family pub is obvious. There is frequent entertainment put on of all kinds from Karaoke nights to live bands and these have always been fantastic nights. More and more families are coming to the pub now WITH their children and a small play area has been provided in the garden. The service is good and the food is great. Overall, it is a great place to go for entertainment or a relaxing drink or to take the family for a meal. There is never any trouble in the pub OR drugs! That is a completely false statement! | Been to the Bird in Hand a few times now and everytime I have eaten there I have had no complaints. Good, traditional pub food with a friendly atmosphere. The lovely couple who now own it took over at the end of last year and have made vast improvements and are constantly trying to involve the whole community. A great place for a few drinks and there is a large enclosed garden for when the weather is nice, with a play area for children who are more than welcome.
