| Towards the end of September 2010 I led a group of walkers from Cargill in Trafford Park on a brisk 9 mile hike around Edale. We had booked and paid for lunch for the group at this pub in the afternoon. Based on the many reviews I had read,I was not expecting a great meal.I did notice that the dates on a lot of the reviews were quite old, e.g. 2007. On arrival the staff were very friendly and showed us to our reserved tables in the back of the pub. Seventeen meals were served. The food was hot, portions were more than adequate and every member of the group was more than satisfied with their meal. The beer (Cornish 1577?) was one of the most flavoursome pints I have tasted for a long time. After the meal I thanked the landlady on behalf of the group for her food and hospitality. | My husband and i had dinner on friday after our walk at the Old nags head at Edale who used to serve really well-kept beers. We were disappointed by the food and the beers. My husband said the beer were sour and he went through a few different labels to try to find a better pint to stick to the night, sadly all of them are flat, except Guinness. My fish and chip was appalling, the batter on the fish is half missing on one side, the fish look yellowy so i think a batter used to be there, what happen to it? My husband ordered steak and ale and mushroom pie. The pie came in a wedge and clearly heated up in a microwave, not homemade as said on their menu, and no visible mushroom or taste of ale. | I arrived at The Old Nags Head in June '09 after doing the Pennine Way for charity and met friends and family who were there to congratulate me. Obviously I was incredibly hungry after walking from Crowden. I wanted something substantial like steak and was told they didn't even serve it. I was dissapointed but was informed that they did a walkers meal to which the barman said and I quote, "I'd like to see you finish that!" Being heartened by this I began to wait the half hour they said it would take (it took 40 minutes) while my uncle and friend ordered their meals. When my food was brought out I was ravenous and what greeted me was, in fairness, pathetic. 1 Cornish Pasty, a few New Potatoes, a meagre amount of Mixed Veg (which tasted like it was straight out of the freezer and into the microwave) and a Cumberland sausage which had most definately been sittng out beforehand for at least 30 mins. I was too hungry to complain (and still a bit afterwards). NOWHERE NEAR ENOUGH! Meanwhile my uncle and my friend were still waiting for their food an hour after they ordered, at which point someone went in to see what was going on? This would not have been a major issue but for my uncle being diabetic. 10 minutes after that my uncle's order arrived with NO APOLOGY for the delay and no sign of my friends order. After 1+1/2 hours there was still no sign of the order made by my friend so both my mum and uncle went in to complain. The Landlady made it clear in no uncertain terms that the order had been taken out and called twice and even once by herself. Not a single one of the party of 20 or so people I was with had even seen her outside, though we were all continuously watching and listening for the order number. My uncle disagreed with her saying we had been waiting for this order number to be called, to which she stated (quite rudely) "I CALLED IT." The food arrived about 10 minute later to a spontaneous round of sarcastic applause and cheering from almost the entire beer garden (though I should say beer garden/car park). It wasn't just our group who had noticed. It was not just the incredibly long wait for the food that annoyed me most, or the poor quality and quantity of it (especially since its so pricey). It was the manner in which our complaint was handled and the inferrence that we were lying too. There was NO offer of the meal being complimentary. There was NO apology and; There was NO acknowledgement that there was anything to complain about in the first place. I know what good service is, I know what good food value is and I know a walkers bar when I see one. THIS PLACE FAILS ON ALL COUNTS. Obviously they do not have to worry about competition from the other pub in the village as either they are both owned by the same people, or The owners of The Nags Head can afford to throw away custom. My recommendation is DONT BOTHER because it appears The Old Nags Head wouldn't care if you did.[Report for Removal] | Joz Watson Manchester Lancashire |

| We didn't even make it into the pub! Sunday lunchtime in late february when the whole of Peaks was very quiet. We had arranged to meet two other couples coming from different directions, all of us originally from areas surrounding the Peak District. We should have realised what we were in for when as we drove up, we noticed two plaques above the two doors - "Ramblers" and "Locals" we jokingly commented that it was a bit like "League of Gentlemen" - we didn't realise how right we were. There was no space in the front carpark, but at the rear we found another. At first it seemed there was no space here either, - an impression quickly reinforced by a man leaping out of the kitchen and putting out parking cones right behind someone as they manoevered out of a space along the edge of the area, admittedly not designated, but not inconveniencing anyone. We eventually found two tight,designated parking spaces right at the back of the car park, and another with one picnic bench plonked right in the middle of it, and a whole pile more in a haphazard pile across about 8 more. In the middle of this perfect example of a pub garden - not - there was a rather glum family sitting at one of three remaining benches, surrounded by beer kegs. Rather than moving the single picnic bench, and possibly incurring the wrath of the landlord, we shuffled the cars around, squeezed them up and managed to get the last car in behind one of our cars, tight against the edge of the car park where it blocked no-one else in. Promptly someone flew out of the kitchen and told us we couldn't park there. We explained we were not blocking anyone else in, apart from one of the two cars we were with. the man was adamant - "you can't park there - health and safety". Quite how this infringed those rules beat us. No pedestrian exit from the pub or 'garden' was blocked, no fire access was hindered - and if there was a problem with space, why not move the picnic bench - or more radically still, pile the others up more neatly, allowing more parking and a more scenic outdoor seating area to boot. to allow further parking. We started to ask exactly wht rule we had infringed but realised we were beaten. We have never felt so unwelcome and decided not to go in. Having read a couple of other reviews on the same pub on other sites, it seems we are not alone and probably had a lucky escape not actually going in. Avoid like the plague - try the Cheshire Cheese in Hope instead! Great mix of locals, ramblers, 'sunday lunchers' and everyone mucked in together. Great atmosphere.
