Normally this is a great pub, but readers might like to hear about our recent experience, which resulted in our party of 6 waiting over an hour for food, being shouted at by the senior member of staff and being told not to come back. Let me explain – we arrived at the pub at 8.00pm on a Tuesday night. After ordering our food by 8.15pm, the starters came - so far so good. I think I should point out that half of the tables were empty, so in no way could the pub have been described as busy. An hour later our main courses had not arrived, so I went to ask the staff where the food was and how long we would have to wait as one of our party was pregnant. I was completely shocked when the member of staff proceeded to shout at me, saying in an aggressive tone, ‘its coming’ – well that told me! What followed was an appalling display of poor service, the waitress brought out one dish at time with about five minutes in between dishes. First the lamb shank which was floating in about a pint of watery juice and the veg had been over cooked, to the point that they reminded me of those tasteless things we all endured at school. The Trio of sausages which was served with a lovely onion gravy was piled up with cold peas, which at some point were probably green, but that was at least 2 hours before they were served. After complaining about the lamb shank, I was told that the shank came with a ju, not a gravy, big deal, I’ve had this meal before and it has never been served with a pint of fluid poured over it. Eventually we were offered a replacement, but only after most of us had finished our food. It was politely declined and a refund requested. Reluctantly the same member of staff agreed to take this off our bill. To be completely fair the curry and the steaks were good, but by the time they had arrived most of the other food had been eaten (apart from the shank). After finishing our food we went to pay and to express disappointment with the service, which as a regular it had been way below their normal standards. What happened next was truly shocking. We were told there was nothing wrong with the food, which we disagreed with, that the service had been good and that’s what we should expect because they were ‘busy’. No apology was offered and after further words we were asked to leave. So let this be a cautionary tale to those who want to go to the Eastney Tavern – if they have more than 3 people already having food when you go, be prepared for a long wait and bad service...possibly! This pub is just trading on its name, which used to stand for good food and friendly service. I am genuinely sad at this change, especially as it means that I will now have to find a new local…any ideas? [Report for Removal] chris m
