| Myself & a friend booked a table at the Wollaston Inn Saturday 28th August. We were seated at our table by a very pleasant waitress. We were shown the fish menu along with the "Al a carte" menu. I chose the Fish plate £7.95- hot smoked salmon + marinated seafood + mackerel pâté + roll mop herrings + anchovies+ our own bread. The salmon was cold, the marinated seafood was out of a jar,the mackeral pate was pleasant, best of all was the bread. My friend chose the Fusion plate-lamb kofte + chicken tikka + pork satay + onion bhaji + prawn crackers + mango chutney + pickled chillies,& was served on a plate with a large chip in it.My friend said her strater was pleasant but hardly stunning and not to the tune of £8.75! As a main course my friend chose from the fish menu_ scallops with cauliflower risotto, the scallops were readily eaten but found to be a little overcooked and the risotto was wishy washy with too much liquid rather than a "loose" rice dish which my friens left. I had great hopes for my main course of; new spring lamb rump + braised shoulder & minted goats cheese wellington + potato & butternut squash fondant + confit garlic + courgettes, peas & asparagus + lamb jus. I thought that as the chef thought this worthy of a price tag of £18 that this would be delicious. Im not sure how old this lamb was but it wasnt the taste of spring i expected, the lamb wellington was nice, the goats cheese gave it flavour, the potatoe was rather solid and not a fondant in any way shape or form. The lamb jus would have been lovely and have given a rather bland unseasoned meal some flavour had it not been so sparse it had run into the edging of the square plate & dried. The plates were only just warm and the food likewise. We were shown the dessert menu but declined to waste any more money. I have had lunch here which was nice & good value for money. However i could not say the same for the evening Al a carte menu. Service 8/10, food 5/10, value 4/10. Needless to say we will not be returning for The Wollaston Inn fine dining experience again.
