| Our party of six looked forward to our meal, but the pate starter tasted like Tesco value, more than half the mussels were empty, the lamb on skewers were tough, and the so called chocolate mousse was no other than instant whip! | Having been to the bell numerous times i have to say the food is always of excellent standard and the staff are polite and friendly. I have tried the calvery which always has a choice of 3 meats each cooked to perfection, the vegetables are in abundance.Ive tried most of the al a carte menu and would highly recommend the mixed grill, the food ive always found to be of excellent taste and value. | Recommended in the 'Eating Out' guide published by East Northants County Council. That document states The Bell '...offers...superb food..... It most certainly does not, by any stretch of imagination. The pub advertises 'Prawns and Crab cocktail' as a starter. The dish served had absolutely no crab in it. When I asked about that, I was told that 'crab sticks' (included in the dish) have a percentage of crab in them!! (I was not charged for that dish). The mussel starter was heavily oversalted, to the extent that the sauce was actually inedible and most of the mussels were left. Claims of the 'chef' (my inverted commas) preparing all dishes freshly is preposterous. When asked if a lamb dish could be 'pink', the reply from the chef (through waitress) was 'as it's cooked already - I can't make it the way you want'. The fish pie was heavily overcooked and was so smothered in cream and cheese topping that one could not taste the fish at all. All of the accompanying vegetables, carrots, string beans and cauliflower were so overcooked they were inedible. Putting a fork into them caused them to fall apart. Be under no illusions, this pub sells below average 'pub grub'. Sadly, it has featured in local publications which, in my opinion, are misleading and therefore, will continue to attract unsuspecting people like myself. It may have a qualified chef however; it clearly serves food previously prepared by some catering organisation that assume most outlets will have somebody who can boil a bag or operate a microwave.
