| Visited for Sunday lunch after being recommended. the pub itself is quite beautiful, the log fire adding to the charm. The roast dinners we had were exceptional and the desserts were fantastic. | We chose this pub for lunch on the basis that it had won an award for its food, and were disappointed. I ordered liver and bacon - the liver had not had the gristly bits trimmed off, so 25% of what was on my plate was inedible, and the bacon still had its rind on. The gravy was obviously synthetic. My husband enjoyed his vegetable cobbler, but our fellow diners had reservations about their beef & ale suet puddings, which they found too dry. Top marks for the sweets, though, which were excellent. The coffee was weak and watery. Service was exceedingly slow and not very friendly, the coffee being practically slapped down in front of us. | Visited as part of our new Sunday venture, trying our local pubs out for Sunday lunch accompanied by 2 elderly relatives, our 3 year old and 15 year old teenager. Surroundings were pleasant and the ales very good, but the choice of roasts were expensive for what they were. The main grumble was that the beef was tough and when exchanged, returned rare and still tough, and in the case of my daughter, bloody. The waitresses were sympathetic, but the landlady (I think) not, more concerned about having to issue additional portions of veg! My elderly mother-in-law also found the pork tough, and took a long time to eat it - she was too embarrassed to complain though. Considering this was a highly recommended pub which had won awards, we were very disappointed - the dessert was very good though. Not on our "return to" list.
