| Awful!! sent the food back as it was freezing cold. Looked terrible too!! Kept the kids meals as they were starving after waiting an hour and a half to be served with less than edible food, 1 very burnt sausage, cold mash and bullet type peas. After being asked by a young girl who had "NO" cutomer service experience whatsoever, What do you want me to do!? We sent all the meals back, waited another half hour, then gave in and went to KFC!!! of all places in disgust, please do not bother if you want a decent meal. Please note that KFC is not a usual venue for us for sunday lunch, however the kids would not have waited any longer to be fed and we were all starving. | Absolutely dreadful. We went there for a family re-union (we had driven 8 hours round trip!). I have nothing good to say about this place. Tatty, cold room; slow grumpy service; poor menu choice; very slow; horrible food - roast potatoes joke, gravy even worse; medium steak very, very well (badly) done; spoilt a special occasion. would have refused to pay bill if down to me. | We went to the Half Moon on an early Saturday evening in Autumn. We chose the venue as it was a convenient location and we had a small child with us. On the plus side the service was reasonable, we did not struggle to find a table. The staff were also courteous enough to advise they has a big party due in later and we would be advised to order sooner rather than later, if we didnt want to be delayed. Prices within the menu ranged from £2 to £5 for a starter and main courses averaged around £6, which is fairly cheap. Now the down side. One of the the reasons for choosing the pub was that we had a one year old baby with us. Obviously this means that we may ask the staff to heat up some baby food. The bar staff seemed happy to put the baby food into a microwave for us, however the bar manager/land lady refused saying she was only happy to provide us with a jug of hot water - which clearly is not sufficient to heat through a glass jar. (happy to pass over a jug of boiling water to a customer but not heat something in the microwave??). The menu is not very extensive, if you dont like variations on chicken/steak/pie then you will struggle to find something you like. I had the nachos to start followed by the sweet chilli chicken. The nachos were not very good, not warm what looked like grated cheese and a not very nice salsa poured on top. The sweet chili chicken was basically a butterfly chicken breast with bottled sweet chili source poured over it. This was served with chips and limpish and clearly microwaved carrots and peas. It seems all the chicken dishes are served with chips carrots and peas. The chips tasted like oven chips and the meat itself was a poor quality. I would not even prepare a meal like this for myself at home, let alone pay for someone else to do it. I appreciate that the prices are very cheap, but for only a couple of pound more and I am no fan of either, even the harvester or the beefeaters do much better. I hate the idea of small local pubs closing but they do not have a god given right to exist, places such as the half moon have to do better if they are going to survive. The menu and quality they are turning out would have passed about fifteen to twenty years ago but today people have seen far too much 'celebrity chefery' to know that there is better out there. It looks to me that the place is on its last legs, 'sold out' stickers over various items in the menu might be a hint that all is not well, and that the quality of the food being delivered is indicactive of possible cost savings within the business. On a final note, charging £1.45 for a cup of nescafe with UHT milk pots- the coffee machine was not working and I watched as the bar manager scooped a largeish portion of instant coffee from a tin into my cup - is not really on.[Report for Removal] | S Bo Markyate Hertfordshire |

| It's such a shame to walk into a great pub and find it almost empty. Around Christmas time, you'd expect each and every public house, particularly those serving food, to be packed to the rafters and especially on New Year's Eve. 2008's New Years Eve found us looking for a pub we could get into and eat and our usual haunt stopped serving food at 5.30, so we called the Half Moon (which we'd been to on two previous occasions). They weren't full, they were serving food until 8.30 and we could reserve a table. The fayre here is traditional 'pub grub' from burgers to gammon and steak, with a nice childrens menu too. Beer and wine appear initially to be limited, but it's more than enough to choose from and the prices are extremely good. If you're lucky enough to catch the pub at lunchtime, it's two meals for £8 on selected food and we can heartily recommend the steak and ale pie - it's FULL of tender meat, with a puff pastry lid, served with carrots, broccoli and mash. The service in this place is fantastic. Currently at lunchtimes, two women from the upper age groups are serving behind the bar and bringing the food and are pleasant to talk to, helpful and courteous. In the evening, we can only assume that the landlord and landlady are present along with a couple of younger staff - the service doesn't change at all. Nothing's too much trouble and all are really nice people. This is something difficult to find these days in a village pub and we've been to a few where you're treated as 'strangers in the village' rather than paying customers and this just isn't the case at the Half Moon. Talking to the lunchtime ladies, it seems their business has been affected by the recent upgrades to the M1 and particularly the bridge over it - when it was closed, customers assumed the pub was too. People of the local area, we urge you to use this little gem, keep them open. The owners will not allow them to advertise (ridiculous decision), so after our last visit, we promised them a review to help out and we'll look to post this on as many sites as we can. Just do the Half Moon a favour - use it and give them support - you won't regret it and you'll come out wanting to go back! Enjoy![Report for Removal] | Robin Bithrey Dunstable Bedfordshire |
