Waggon and Horses, South Reston, Lincolnshire This area of Lincolnshire has needed a decent gastropub for some time; somewhere you can get a good range of ales and decent selection of wine; a modest menu of locally sourced food prepared well and served simply; staff who know how to run a pub and like working with people – in particular a landlord who instantly makes you feel at home, and a convivial atmosphere in which to enjoy all of the above. What a shame that this pitiful little grot-hole fails on all these counts. The signs were good. The website is impressive, and was tempting enough to attract us to drive almost an hour to sample the fare. Perhaps if they’d spent the money on a chef with tastebuds and a restaurant manager who could have run the place with more charm than Goebbels on a wet Monday the experience wouldn’t have been quite so distressing. But we’ll come to angry little man later. First, an impartial view on the ‘food’ we were served. When you see ‘Salami and Black Pudding Salad’ on a menu, you imagine that the kitchen might have perhaps paired said meats with perhaps some haricot beans or perhaps a bit of cous cous or something to balance the intensity of the meat. You don’t imagine that they would get some black pudding, and some salami, and put it with the kind of sweaty side salad you used to get with your Berni Inn steak and chips in the seventies, when no one knew better. But that’s what you get. The meat, iceberg, tomato with the skin of Peter Stringfellow and some sorry looking cress. Yum! We should have left then. But no. Main courses were a gammon and… some non-descript vulcanised white and yellow viscous solids that made a charming ‘plink’ when you tapped them with a fork. Eventually we were able to discern that they were eggs, once. What a shame; were about to patent them as a new indestructible road covering and make millions. They were returned to the kitchen. We thought ‘Pig’s Fry’ might have meant a delicious selection of bits of porker; liver, kidney, sweetbreads and so on, tenderly casseroled. In the Waggon and Horses it means chunks of liver with tubes still visible and other nasties, delicately slopped into a sauce of the finest powder gravy. The surf and turf would be difficult to ‘Waggonize’, you would imagine. How could one get it so badly wrong? A steak – rare – and some prawns, grilled. In an interesting twist, they serve the steak hot and overdone, and the supermarket freezer bag miniature prawns cold. Although they were originally hot. We sent them back; the kitchen put them in the microwave for a good ten minutes. Result: tiny little pink pebbles and steak like Camilla’s backside. The biggest success of the night was the two vegetarian sausages on mashed potato. Well done, Waggon and Horses; if you‘d had these at a friend’s house you wouldn’t comment on how bad the food was. Definitely the highlight. This was awesomely, spectacularly bad food. It would have been thus had it been served by Myleene Klass/ George Clooney/ delete as appropriate. At the Waggon it was served by a strange little man with some serious repressed rage issues. When we politely asked if we could have the steak and the prawns at least the same temperature, it was like watching the bit in Downfall where Adolf realises the game is up. Customer service has rarely been this poor, although the ten year old they had working as a dessert waitress and the lady who greeted us seemed perfectly nice. Maybe they were just pleased to see normal human beings having spent all evening with the shrunken Basil Fawlty with the Napoleon complex. Glad to be of service, ladies. In short, think twice about this culinary black hole. [Report for Removal] thegourmet
