My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night earlier this week. We had booked by phone as the Fox Inn was advertised as a bed & breakfast pub. We were told on the phone that breakfast would not be provided and the price per night was £20 per person. On arrival we were briefly showed our room and paid in full as this is their policy (in hindsight we should have walked away at this point but hadn't given the room a thorough examination or seen the bathroom yet, and we were unsure if we'd find anywhere else at short notice). The room itself had not been hoovered or cleaned & there were stains on the carpets and walls. The sink in the room was dirty, the window sill filthy, and the curtains were hanging off the rail. The room also smelt of stale cigarettes although the owners had tried to mask this with some sort of carpet freshener. The mattress must have been about 20 years old and offered a very uncomfortable night with no padding & springs jabbing us in the side/back all night. The room was also very noisy but this is because the pub is situated on the main road. One thing I will say is that the bedding was clean. Unfortunately this is the only positive I can think of... Next we came to the bathroom. We were told to use the bathroom next door to our room (which had an 'out of order' sign on the door), and we were disgusted with the state of this facility. This bathroom had clearly not been cleaned it was filthy, and the floor tiles had all come unstuck and were in some sort of disarray. Neither of us are snobs by any means but we chose not to use the shower as it was so filthy! Now down to the main bar. Against our better judgment we decided to stop for a quick drink at the bar downstairs on our way out. The drinks were fine but the bar was extremely dated and dark. It was a Monday night so the pub was quiet, although I'd be very reluctant to visit on a weekend... There were signs on the toilet doors saying 'No men in the ladies toilets' and 'Anyone taking drugs in the toilets will be barred'. The toilets were once again filthy. We were told if we were checking out early in the morning to use the fire escape, which we did, and noticed as we left that an old pillow and vacuum cleaner were still sat in the access corridor, along with dirty laundry, where they'd been left the day before. I understand that the room price is relatively low in comparison to some places, however I have stayed in a number of backpacker hostels for considerably less per night - all of which were of much better standard than this place. Its possible this pub may be undergoing some sort of handover. If this is the case, or in any case actually, they should not be letting rooms to the public as the standard is completely unacceptable.[Report for Removal] Becky
