| Here is a quote from Adam Edwards who has been searching for the best traditional country pubs. He had some rough-and-ready rules: "The pub must serve decent beer [and] be part of the local community. The food must be simple and good, but should not eclipse the important business of drinking. It should not be so popular that the locals have been squeezed out, nor so exclusive that it did not welcome the colonel and the cleaning lady. Ideally, there should be no piped music, no microwaves and no electronic games. Dogs, and gumboots must be allowed. Children could be seen, but should not be heard......." I think we can safely say The Sportsman would pass with flying colours on all counts! This is, in my humble opinion, the best pub in the area for miles - Marc runs this pub with his heart and luckily also has a great business head and knows exactly what the punters want from a pub. | I am biased as this is my local pub and run by some good friends... but it's such a benefit to the local area. Although it's the only pub around, the Sportsman would still be the busiest even if there were ten others - it's traditional, clean, friendly and there are plans to improve it further, we can't wait! The food is perfect and fairly priced for what you get. I work up in London and, believe me, these are not London prices! | This used to be a nice pub until it was taken over by some new people. Now it is very pretentious and overpriced. They think they are a London Restaurant. They charged my friend £15 for just a piece of salmon on "a bed of spinach", but there was so little spinach it was hidden below the salmon and couldn't be seen, and there were no accompanying vegetables.
