The food is usually very good and my partner and I were regular customers at The Olde Bull Inn at one point. On several occasions, we ate in the restaurant; in particular, my partner took me for a very pleasant meal for my birthday and he gave the waitress a £10.00 tip. On our next visit, we just wanted a casual meal out and decided to eat in the bar area. How interesting. It was as if the staff had had personality transplants: no smiles - everything seemed like too much trouble. (The food in the bar area is slightly cheaper than in the restaurant but still pricey). My partner politely pointed out that the portion of ribs he had received was very small despite a claim on the menu that it would be a challenge to eat; there were three and a half ribs. The waitress (having apparently forgotten her £10 tip on a previous occasion) bristled and started to argue with. She then called for the manageress who was extremely rude and patronising and accused us of making a fuss about nothing. She admitted that chef had accidentally given a smaller portion than he was supposed but, rather than apologise, reminded us that we were eating in the bar and not the restaurant. Eventually, the manageress charged us for half a rack of ribs instead of a full rack. We would far rather have had a pleasant meal and paid the full price. Why did we have to be subjected to the confrontation in the first place. The waitress then made matters worse by repeatedly asking, 'Are you satisfied now? Do you agree that I've handled this well?' A few weeks ago, we decided to give The Olde Bull Inn another go and took our son with us to eat in the bar area. He ordered fish and chips. He is a polite boy who doesn't like to complain. I noticed that he was pulling bones out of his mouth with every mouthful. He apologised and said that he couldn't eat it. It took a while to attract the attention of a waitress. We eventually did and she called the manageress. When I started explaining, the manageress started smiling at us in a patronising manner. My partner and I both asked at the same time, 'Why are you smiling?' to which she replied, 'It's fresh fish.' For a while, this reply was repeated in response to every point we attempted to make. She then told us that we had to pay because half of the meal had been eaten. When we said that we had tried to attract the waitress's attention the manageress said, 'We don't offer table service in the bar. You could have kept your hand up and we would have eventually seen you.' She told my partner that she could see that I was unlikely to ever return to the restaurant because I would clearly never see reason. My partner payed about £75.00 for us to be totally humiliated. As for this idea of treating people who eat in the bar as inferiors, this is outrageous. Very often, as in our case, these are the same loyal customers who have eaten in the restaurant but just on a different day.[Report for Removal] Jacqueline Townsend
