| Having enjoyed a glorious meal comprising items chosen from a very innovative menu, taken in delightful surroundings, I felt I ought show my appreciation by posting a review here on pubs-u-like. I was surprised to read some of the negative comments posted. I was also surprised to see so many reports "pending review" that were not listed in detail, which I would suppose would reflect the apparently odd outcome of only 19 points out of a possible 145. My own experience suggests that either, the pubsulike database interpretations might need to be looked at, or the "pending reviews" should not be taken into consideration until published. | Good views over rolling Buckinghamshire countryside. Food priced at gastropub levels (£15 for main courses) and simply don't doesn't deliver. Leek and celery soup was far too watery, chips were overcooked in oil that hadn't been changed in some time and the steak was distinctly average in quality and overcooked. When I gave the manageress some balanced feedback she became defensive, claiming that hundreds of people enjoy their food rather than addressing the issues raised. I will not be returning. | I heard this pub was very good and after hearing there was a new chef i had to check it out, Well i can tell you i will go back, such a warm welcome by all the staff the chef even came out to ask how our meals were, i had Salmon and it was the best iv ever had i was very empressed!!! Should i even mention the desserts WOW amazing all hand made in house. | It is always disheartening to find people making negative comments about a pub you like, particularly when some of the comments are based on slightly irrelevant factors (like whether a fire is lit- beams and a fire are not the only qualities of a good pub!- or how you felt sorry for the two waitresses because they were understaffed- sometimes even the best pubs can get caught off guard by a random busy day!) Many of these comments seem to ignore the fantastic food that this pub offers! Last bank holiday monday I enjoyed a traditional basket meal of scampi and chips, whilst my friend had a perfectly cooked steak- they were both divine! The service was fast and efficient and the atmosphere buzzing. Too often people are quick to write a negative review but when its positive people usually can't be bothered- so I wanted to take the time to fully recommend this pub to anyone who enjoys great food. | I have just returned from my latest visit to the Black Boy, and I must say they have managed to wow me again. The waitresses couldn't have done more to help me enjoy my meal, and on a nice warm spring day, the garden was perfect. | We had heard many good things about this pub and called in today for lunch. Although the food was good it is pricey and the service was appalling. Two, pleasant enough, young girls were having to do everything and in a packed restaraunt it just isnt good enough. We were there for almost 3 hours for just two courses. | Thought I should put matters straight. Had a call from my son telling me someone was badmouthing my favourite pub, on the internet. I was in The Black Boy with company and having a damn fine lunch when this Frenchwoman came in and started 'wingeing' about the lack of a log fire. She was extremely loud and not prepared to listen to the staff when told that the chimney flue was damaged and could not be replaced for some days.Hence the reason for not having a lit fire. The landlord and lady were on kitchen duty looking after a pub full of diners and so were not available for comment. Probably a good thing. I have visited The Black Boy Oving for several years, travelling quite a distance and thoroughly enjoying every visit. The atmosphere, lit fire or not, is excellent, food, wine and beer and the views are excellent. The owners are pleasant and well thought of and Pub, if you can find it, is well worth a visit. | We tour England every Christmas looking for English pubs with log fires and beams, a pleasant atmosphere and good food. The atmosphere at the Black boy Oving (Befordshire/Buckinhamshire)depends on a lighted log fire and when I hinted that it would be nice to have the fire lit at Christmas, was ignored. When the barmaid suggested he was mean not to light one, she was ignored too. The food was very mediocre at best and the brussel sprouts were uncooked. The restaurant was in a modern characterless part of the pub and the land lord obviously has no idea how to create an atmosphere. Indeed, it contrasted with the previous day when a landlord in nearby Woburn, actually asked us if we wanted the fire to be lit. | My family and friends travelled to the black boy 3 weeks ago for my wifes 60th birthday lunch as it was in a great location for several of us travelling in from different counties. We found the place amazing. The chef couldnt have been more helpful in dealing with one or two of our more "picky eaters"!, and we were served with the upmost courtesey and professionalism. The waitresses couldnt have done any more! I think about 16 of the 24 of us had the slow roast lamb which was absolutely delicious. It fell off the bone and was served with fresh, buttery green vegetables. This pub is a little gem which has the most beautiful, well kept garden I have seen in buckinghamshire. | Was disgusted with the food and the staff. Was treated poorly by the manager when my food was under cooked. His coments where "well don't ever return then." Woundn't ever return.
