| Can't comment on the rooms as I did not stay, just want for a meal, but although its a nice restaurant the prices are just sky high considering the overall experience. We went in a Monday night, admittedly we had booked for 7.15, I got a bit lost and eventually we got there at 7.45. Waiting at the bar for 5minutes, I eventually had to knock on the bar to get any service (not that it was busy anyways, there were only 2 tables occupied). She then showed us to our seats and we started looking at the menu. The "Early Bird" menu stood out at me at £15.95 for 2 courses (must be ordered before 8PM), but when I asked about this, I was told I was too late to order that, now I'm no expert, but 7.50PM on my watch has always occurred before 8PM and it would not take me more than 10minutes to order, but I must have been mistaken as I was told I was too late to order, maybe they had forgotten the clocks had just changed, or that I had been waiting for 5 minutes for the barmaid to turn up while I was waiting. Disappointed as this left a bad taste in the mouth, I can understand if the restaurant was busy, but it was not (3 tables occupied including ours), so I would expect they would want to please the customers they do get through the door however possible (maybe just my old view). Ah well, not a big deal (I thought), until I looked at the standard menu prices. Yeah the food does sound very nice, but come on, £7.95 for mushroom Risotto in Marsden - rice, parmesan, cream, thyme and a bit of truffle oil should nowhere near £8 for a starter, so my wallet begrudgingly decided against that (which was a pity as this was the starter on the Early bird menu that I wanted), the cheapest of the starters was £4.95 for the soup or £6.95 minimum for anything else (going up to £9.95 for Scallops). Looking at the main menu I got an even bigger shock, £20 for the cheapest steak (Rib-Eye) and £23 for a fillet, I don't mind paying for a good steak from a good local farm, but seriously, it’s Mardsen, not Manchester or London, and it does not have the decor to pull of these prices. In the end, I decided to go for an item on the special board, I went for a fish linguini instead (£13.95, and my friend the belly pork (£17.95). However, another foul of the waitress was not even knowing what the fish was on the fish board, there was only 4 main items on the specials board, in my mind you should really know what they are without having to ask the chef, simply front of house expectation me thinks! Things did get better, the waitress brought us some bread to start and a small cup of very nice soup as a taster (a nice touch), the bread was thickly slices and tasted good (1 brown and 1 white each) and butter was nice and salty, the soup was fresh and tasted excellent, just enough actually as a starter and I have to say, I wouldn’t mind paying £3 or similar for that kind of starter (the smaller portion compared to £5 as advertised on the menu – I think £5 for a soup is a bit steep), pity they don’t offer something small like that that was cheaper on the menu, I would have gladly paid £3 for a small soup with bread, but it came complimentary which was a nice touch, but going against what I have said previously regarding pricing, it does not really make sense to give this for free, they should be making money off things like this, maybe its factored into the main course price which would make more sense when looking at the main prices, but obviously looking at the menu on the internet you would not realise this... The mains came and mine looked good and on the whole tasted good, although it was a pity that we had to guess what the rectangular shaped wedge was served with our meals, it ended up being potato dauphinoise (I think) but a pity the waitress did not even tell us about. As previously stated, my food tasted good, seemed fresh and was not fatty, but disappointed that the linguine seemed to be more like pasta, but it was cooked well. My friend said the belly pork was excellent and I must say it did smell good. Overall a reasonable meal, let down by a barmaid who couldn't tell the time (or recognise customer satisfaction is key to repeat custom), and what I think are overly optimistic prices considering the actual food you get, front-of-house service, and restaurant decor (which to me looked like it needs a good refurb). Maybe it’s the Yorkshireman in me, I know I keep an eye on my wallet and you know what you are getting when you go to the Olive Branch if you check the menu online, or the internet reviews which all say the same thing regarding prices, I just think the quality of food, the restaurant decor and the location it’s being sold in, it just does not quite cut it considering the bill you come out with at the end of your meal – I won’t be going back any time soon.[Report for Removal] | Harvey Hanson Huddersfield West Yorkshire |

| We first had a meal here over a year ago when on a walking holiday based in Marsden. The food was superb. A year later in November we again visited Marsden and again visited the Olive Branch, hoping but not really believing the food could be that good again. It was. I had duck in red wine sauce the first time, and chicken in tarragon sauce the second. My husband had fish both times. My pudding, sticky toffee (the traditional, old-fashioned sort) was the best hot pudding I have ever tasted! I only wish we lived in the area (we live near London). In summary, the Olive Branch deserves recognition for it’s high quality food and good service - and all at a value for money price as well! [Report for Removal] | Ann Stevenage Hertfordshire |
