| We had a bizarre experience at The George. It has always been renowned for its food for as long as I can remember (probably about 20 years) irrespective of ownership, so we felt confident when we booked a table there for Saturday 26 May. We arrived at about 7:50 having booked for 8pm and had a drink in the bar whilst looking at the menus after making our presence known to the landlord/restaurant manager. We witnessed but tried to ignore an argument between the aforementioned and a lady who I suspect was his wife and who also appeared later to be cooking in the kitchen. At about 8:20, we made our own way to our table which had been pointed out to us previously. There only seemed to be 2 people serving in the restaurant - the man, and a young waitress, both of whom seemed to be really stressed. By 9:10, no-one had come to take our order so we got the attention of the man who sent the young girl to take our order. She was very apologetic and said that she only usually worked lunchtimes but was helping out as they were short staffed. I felt very sympathetic towards her as she was doing her best, was rushed off her feet and seemed to be getting grief from the guy as were most people - staff and guests alike. We sat opposite the kitchen and every time the guy walked into it, he seemed to be being aggressive to the waiting and cooking staff. A lady on an adjoining table to ours asked if their food was nearly ready (they had been waiting for at least an hour ) and the response from the guy was a shouted 'No'. He emerged from the kitchen and told them in an irritated and aggressive manner that their food would be ready in 7 minutes. Their main courses arrived in stages and their vegetables came out about 20 minutes after their main meal so most people had finished when the vegetables arrived. I don't think they complained for fear of being shouted at again. Our starters, when they finally arrived were good and the portion sizes were good. Our main courses were cold as were the plates with the exception of my husband’s pork ‘loin’ (which was most definitely not loin as it was fatty and a completely different cut) which was hard and dried up as if it had been re-heated in a microwave numerous times, and definitely not worth the £10 or so that it cost. The vegetables were so-so and again appeared as though they had been re-heated. Other notable events were the comments from a guy at the bar who had ordered a coffee and who had been given out-of-date, soured cream with it twice and commented to our friend that ‘they were trying to poison him’; the two times that the landlord/owner/restaurant manager knocked into my shoulder with quite a bit of force whilst rushing to the kitchen, and didn’t apologise or acknowledge it at all; the table of people who were seated before us and who didn’t receive their first morsel of food until 10:20, and the extremely slow service at the bar. All in all, I don’t know if the problems were just because they were short-staffed as the food was ‘promising’ and did seem to be freshly (if very slowly) prepared rather than mass-produced. However, this is no excuse for rudeness, and if I was the proprietor of an establishment which was uncharacteristically providing poor standards of food and service, I would give a discount or offer a discount on future visits to try and demonstrate to customers that this was not ‘the norm’. Be cautious if you are thinking of booking here – maybe go and observe the establishment before committing to what might be a service akin to Fawlty Towers rather than Ye Olde George Inn.[Report for Removal] | Kathy Horndean Hants |
