We went for lunch on father's Day and clearly they had booked more customer's than the kitchen could handle. One menu choice not available, no vegetarian option with carvery, the vegetarian gravy which arrived after a wait was solid and had to be scraped from the jug, the cauliflower was raw rather then al dente, brought out before cooked as previous dish empty on carvery. Star of the day, Dad, didn't get his meal at all. Nor were fishcakes brought until 10 minutes after we had all finished. When the rest of us finished Dad cancelled his meal not wanting to eat alone, although it was brought 10 minutes later. As we had been told to vacate the table by 2.30 he would not have had time to eat it anyway. We also had no time for a dessert, but didn't really want one anyway after the poor service and food. How disappointing fof Dad's special day.[Report for Removal] jill christie

This was my first visit to The Hobnails Inn and I must say that I was very pleased with the service. The restaurant has been a favourite of my parents for some time and I was pleased with their judgement. Although the 6 of us visited on Sunday without a booking we were warmly welcomed by the manageress who kindly arranged a nice table for us after a short wait. We all thorougly enjoyed our carvery's and the Desserts were all great. With over 100 people in the restaurant we only had a short wait for extra drinks and the waitress was very courteous. I am not easily pleased and would not normally bother with reviewing restaurants but in this instance I felt a positive review was in order. Thanks again.[Report for Removal] Peter Ross

I am astounded by the adverse comments in the earlier reviews! Four of us had lunch at the Hobnails on 20th.May 2008 and we all had excellent food, with very efficient and friendly service. So much so, that we intend to go back next Sunday. [Report for Removal] Margaret Fairbairn

Despite nice old-worldy location would never go here again or recommend it to anyone. Terrible food and slow service. Had to wait far too long. More than an hour. Staff were rude and impatient.[Report for Removal] Stephen G

The evening out I today spent at The Hobnails has been one of the worst dining experiences I have ever suffered. This was extremely disapointing as I had had extremely positive exerience of the restaurant as a child. I took my mum out for an impromptu treat dinner at The Hobnails - a comparatively local establishment. We arrived at 8.05 and were warned that it might be 9.00 before we could have a table. We were happy to wait this... until it transpired that this estimate was hopelessly unrealistic. At 9.20 while we were *still* sitting outside in the pub 'garden' - a view of a rough field filled with nettles and dock leaves/the main road - when our orders were taken (after those of 3 groups of people who had arrived later than us). At 9.45 we were *finally* seated in the main restaurant. It took a further 10 mins for our meals to arrive (overall some 1hr 50mins after our arrival!). To make matters worse, when they eventually did arrive, both of our meals were highly unsatisfactory. My mum had ordered the standard rump steak - served with tomatoes, mushrooms and chips... what arrived was a steak, half a tomato and three mushroom caps. No chips ever materialised. Leaving mum with an incomplete meal. I ordered a Caesar salad. As I suffer from a tomoto allergy Caesar is usually an ideal choice, but with a certain amount of cynicism built on experience I even thought to check that the pub didn't include tomato in its garnish (although tomatoes are not a standard component of a Caesar this proved to be a wise choice, since the server I spoke to indicated that tomatoes are normally used in the setting to provide colour in the salad). When my salad eventually arrived it consisted of: chicken, bacon, Caesar dressing, several types of salad 'greens', red onion (lots!!!!!), "croutons", peppers (red and yellow), carrots, cucumber and a spinkling of herbs around the edge of the plate. Rather more ingredients than a standard Chucken Caesar (though missing the parmesan) In addition to the Caesar dressing placed on top of the dish an oily/sweet'extra' dressing not disclosed on the menu had been added. This addition was in no way beneficial making the entire dish both oily and sweet. I ended up picking some of the chicken off the top of the dish and leaving the remainer. Although I did not complain about what I had regarded as a highly unsatisfactory plate of food (of which I ate less than half), my mum was infuriated on my behalf and did when the waiting staff asked if we had enjoyed our meal. Within minutes of receiving negative feedback a member of staff - who in no way identified his role within the hierarchy of the business - emerged from the general direction of the kitchen to follow up on the complaint. This follow up largely consisted of some extremely loud attempts to defend the changes which had been made to a classic dish... changes which were not indicated on the menu. It is utterly ridiculous to serve more than one dressing with a Caesar salad. The additional dressing allegedly consisted of honey, wine vinegar and basil - however if these ingredients were used it was completely impossible to tell past the overpowering red onion incororated in the salad itself. Our complaints were not the only ones. The table immediately behind us were likewise not presented with the whole of the meals and one of the members of the party when asked whether she had enjoyed her meal commented that she had eaten the food, but been extremely unhappy with it. I was frankly furious to find myself in this position. No customer who has had to wait nigh on 2 hours for their food should have to justify compaining about the standard of the service received - but when the food was an inexcusable mess made out of a classic recipe (without indication of any 'twisting' being made on the menu) there is simply NO excuse which can adequately cover the situation. Despite the comparative closeness to my home address of The Hobnails I NEVER intend to eat there again and will confine my attentions to the award-winning gastropub The Plough at Ford, where the food is significantly better and local produce is clearly featured on the menu.[Report for Removal] Ally C
