Just had our annual christmas do at the rose and crown. After trying the food on several occasions during the day and finding it very good ,we decided to have their christmas menu for our party of six. We booked for 7ish and arrived promptly. We were shown straight to our table in the restaurant which was empty at the time. We noticed that it was very chilly and so decided that we would go through to the bar where we knew there was an open fire for a pre-dinner drink, giving the staff time to improve the heating in the dining room as we requested. On reaching the bar we found a very poor excuse for a fire with very little burning as the the actual width of the fire was not being used, and was reduced to about two logs burning slowly in the middle giving off very little heat. 10 minutes later we were asked to come through as our starters were ready and was led to our table by Rebecca, the landlady . As before the room was still very cold and when we pointed this out to her, she replied that the building was four hundred years old!!! The fact was that the radiators were barely on, and after being asked to improve the temperature, she did not, and as she further pointed out, don't worry once you start drinking you'll barely notice it. Fine if you drink!!!We should have realised something was not right as most of the staff were wearing body warmers. The food was generally ok, but not as nice as we'd had before, and certainly not worth the money they charged. The roast beef was very fatty and should have been served with a madiera sauce,it wasn't. The pavlova was all shop bought and then assembled, very disappointing. The spotted dick was microwaved and served with something similar to birds custard, and the victorian christmas pud was microwaved to death and could have been used as a discus, totally inedible. All in all we were very let down on the evening, something we look forward to all year, and suggest if you decide to eat hear that you wear your thermals or at least a bodywarmer as the staff do. A terrible experience! Visited the pub on a Saturday lunchtime during the heatwave of late Sept. The menu looked good so ordered food for myself, wife and two children. Thought the childrens menu price was a bit steep at £6.95 but accepted this as it was a family day out. A big table of customers had order food before us so expected a bit of a wait...1.5 hours later the food finally arrived!! With two young children I don't think this was acceptable and we were sat directly in front of the bar so it should have been obviouse we hadn't received our food. The large table of customers were also complaining of the delays. The landlady wasn't particularly sympathetic and seem to think eating late was in our favour as wouldn't need to feed the kids again that day!! In the end we had the kids food put in a doggy bag and we left ours as we had a prior engagement to meet. Still got changed the full kids price for what became a takeway. I'd also say the quality of the kids food doesn't match the premium price asked ie budget sausages and fish pieces. Never going to that pub again. [Report for Removal] Paul

We haven’t visited the Rose & Crown since it changed hands last year, but it has been a family favourite in the area for a few years. If anything, it’s improved. The food, while always good value and tasty, has moved up a gear. The portions are still generous, but there is evidence of a more skilled approach in the kitchen. I am not a pudding fan but we ordered 2 between 3 of us and they were polished off in 2 ticks – we also got what we asked for even if custard with chocolate mousse is unusual. Service was previously friendly if a bit casual – now more professional and helpful. Our server suggested a good range of local drinks, and I really enjoyed the ale she recommended. This pub deserves more customers – it’s a bit off the beaten track but it’s well worth the effort. If you’re not looking for 2 meals for a fiver, the Rose & Crown is worth a visit and worth every penny.[Report for Removal] Peter Ethelston

What 14 walkers need on a very wet Bank Holiday Monday is somewhere to cheer you up. And that's what we got. Admittedly we had put our orders in as we passed at mid-day. But having completed our walk and changed, we returned at one and were quickly served with both drinks and our meals. The food was excellent, the only drawback being that they had run out of rolls but even that, on a very busy lunchtime, was quickly resolved once brought to their attention.[Report for Removal] A Bourne

We didn't stay in the hotel, but had a lovely lunch at the Rose & Crown last week. It was my husband's birthday and we wanted to eat somewhere friendly and unpretentious. We sat outside in the garden in the sunshine and enjoyed the excellent food and the friendly service. I vote the beef, mushroom & ale pie as good as the one my Mum used to make when I was a little girl ... and my Mum was a superb cook![Report for Removal] martin adams

We eat there on the "off-chance" as (totally out of character !!) we were spending a Saturday at a Fright Night just up the road at Woodchester Mansion with some old friends. We had a great Saturday evening meal. The owners are new (Craig & Rebecca - moved in Nov 2010) and so friendly and attentive. Food was great. Pub itself we really liked. We went back for Sunday lunch to recover from our "haunting" experience. Our only regret is that we had contemplated staying at the pub overnight - but decided against it because we'd be returning at 5am in the morning and thought that might be a problem. Only to find out from Rebecca that it wouldn't have been a problem at all - "you have your own keys". Shame we live so far away.[Report for Removal] Steve Powers

We went to the Rose and Crown one evening on the premise that we had eaten there before in it's previous incarnation under old management. Under new management, the pub has sadly changed beyond recognition. No longer the friendly and welcoming country pub with burning log fires and intimate lighting, you are now faced by a rather bright ceiling light and, what can only be described as, a restaurant lacking in character and atmosphere. Sadly the menu no longer includes treats such as rabbit and pheasant but delivers (below) average pub grub. "Homemade" pies, jacket potatoes, sandwiches and bangers and mash fill the menu. The Food We ordered: 1 x bangers and mash 2 x pies 2 x faggots bangers and mash sausages were burnt, gravy NOT home made but tasted of granules, mash was NOT MASH (but more of that later) faggots wrapped in bacon faggots homemade but underseasoned - bacon barely touched the pan/ grill and chewy pies served with mash, gravy and peas Pie was good but the gravy was not homemade and the peas were undercooked (how can you undercook frozen peas???) and the mash was disgusting MASHED POTATOES These were NOT mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes are peeled potatoes then mashed with butter and milk/ cream. These were mashed with the skins on, tasted old (perhaps made from the aforementioned unused baked potatoes on the menu) and were full of unidentified lumps. (One of our party guessed onions - not pleasant). Sadly the cook was unable to reach for the salt/ pepper again. VEGETABLES ON THE SIDE White cabbage - no seasoning at all - all the party had to add salt Carrots - overcooked and soggy - again NO seasoning at all Cauliflower No seasoning All in all the meal was tasteless and we had to send half of it back. The manager did not offer any alternatives, or any kind of explanation except for "that's how we make mash. We sometimes mix it up and put in mustard etc" (para). Lack of information and a ‘local is best mentality’ is the run of the mill here; we called beforehand as we were staying at a local campsite to ask firstly if dogs are welcome (yes but only in the bar area, which is usual) and secondly when the food finished serving (on a Sunday). We were told it was 7pm, which was well and fine. The term 'stingy' didn't cover the portions we were given (the ‘menu’ was either Sunday lunch or baguette sandwiches; we all went for the Sunday lunch). My portion of 8 small slices of chicken, two small quarters of potatoes, ratatouille vegetables (since when was that ever involved with Traditional Sunday lunch?) and a plethora of gravy soup, would hardly have filled a child's stomach. My portion, as was everyone’s, was luke-warm. My brother asked the waitress after the meal the price of the food, £9.50 she said, then hesitated to say that that included either a starter (which was never offered) or pudding (which was never mentioned when she asked if we wanted the desert 'menu'). We quickly jumped for pudding, as we were all still starving. Granted, the puddings were nice, but from a choice of two, you’d expect them to be; I chose the chocolate cake, the rest chose the apple pie and ice cream, which was delivered with custard. The table next to ours received ice cream after being told they had no custard left. As one of our party went to pay, he was asked for £13.95 a head for the mediocre to below average food, not the waitress-quoted £9.50. He argued that we were told it was £9.95 and eventually paid that, after haggling. As we were leaving (at about 7pm) we saw two locals enter and order from the evening menu we were not told about; hearty steak and chips. We believe the chef cooks the Sunday food and leaves it on heat for the day and then starts again at 7pm, hence the small luke-warm portions. So be warned those who travel; The Rose and Crown at Nympsfield is not for those who are from out of town, and although they should really know better than to treat out of towners the same way as locals in the information age, they clearly don’t know it yet…[Report for Removal] Fern

My wife and I drove out for Saturday lunch. The pub sits in the centre of the village taking pride of place. We were warmly welcomed and offered the choice of the bar or restaurant(same menu). They also do a bar menu. As it was quiet we sat in the bar which slowly filled up. This pub seems to serve locals for drinks as well as passers by for meals. Staff were constantly on the phone taking bookings, I presume for evenings or Sunday. There was a good selection of real ales to choice from as well as the usual popular drinks. Our food was tasty and there was plenty of it. Other meals brought out also seemed to of similar standard. This is well worth a visit, there should be something from the menu to suit most tastes and appetites. The prices are what one would expect.[Report for Removal] John

This is a REAL pub with great atmosphere and conviviality. The pub keeps it's essential character without being at all pretentious or stereotyped. The Gadd family combine a 'hands-on', down-to-earth running of the pub , with a genuine warmth and empathy with the customers. The food is extremely well cooked and presented, and there is plenty to satisfy the hungriest appetite. Add to this a comprehensive choice of 'beverages', and in all they total a satisfying and enjoyable visit. From my 2 visits ( so far)-- I would certainly recommend the Rose and Crown.[Report for Removal] robert mcgilvray
