Having recently visited the Bolton Arms for an evening meal I thought today would be a good time to return for a lunchtime snack as I was walking with a friend of mine. My first visit with my husband had been fairly uneventful. The food was hot and simple and of the home cooked style, not fancy or special but reasonable value. It was not sufficiently good for us to return even though we live nearby but in fairness that may be personal taste. You can imagine my dismay when I returned today for a lunchtime snack and received the most unpleasant, rude in fact, welcome I have ever experienced in our Dales Pubs. Having completed 8 miles of our walk we were hungry and noticed the opening times displayed at the door sugested service until 2.30, it was 2pm and so we stopped for food. It was only a minute or two after 2 pm when we approached the bar and after a few more minutes the barman eventually finished his phone call, looked at us and said 'Yes' in a very curt way as though he were angry about something.A little taken aback I asked about food and We were told in no uncertain terms 'the kitchen is closed' 'Perhaps a sandwich would be possible' I asked politely. 'the kitchen is closed' he said more loudly and in a manner which can only be described as quite rude. I pointed out that the time on the door said 2.30 and again came the reply without explanation 'the kitchen is closed' We left. I ask................ Why show 2.30 on the door and close (I presume) at 2? Why not offer some simple snack in view of the delay being partly due to his phone call? Why so rude? What was wrong with 'Sorry ladies we are all closed up in the kitchen, I can't offer you anything but a drink or some crisps maybe. Castle bolton is only a short walk away'.................. You get the idea.....it costs nothing to be polite and treat people with a measure of respect. I am not used to such behaviour in our Dales and I have been here for 18 years. We even went thirsty on this hot day rather than give him our custom of a drink. For the record we are two ladies in our 50's and consider ourselves presentable, pleaasant and polite. It is all we ask in return. [Report for Removal] Christne McKay
