We called for lunch today in the middle of an otherwise pleasant visit to Walgherton. No complaints concerning service but the meals served were dreadful. A fair portion of salmon was accompanied by a limp salad and undercooked chips. The chicken wrapped in bacon with stilton sauce would have been passable had it not been accompanied by more undercooked chips and overcooked, almost cold vegetables. A small reduction in the bill in response to our complaint did little to alleviate our disappointment. We shall not, as invited on leaving, call again. [Report for Removal] Don Wilkinson

Myself and my family visited The Boars Head last week and found it to be a very enjoyable time! The food was large portioned, plenty for us all to enjoy and we had to wait next to no time at all to be served even though we could see the staff were rather busy at the time. We were greeted with a smile when we arrived which is always a good thing when going to a new place! We were immediately informed of a wine and sweet offer which they run in the week so we ended up with half price sweets and 3 bottles of wine for a pound each as there were 6 of us! The majority of us also had the steak at the offered prices and thoroughly enjoyed them. We will definetly be going back and telling more people about it. Lovely pub indeed. I went for lunch to The Boar's Head on the 20th February 2011 to celebrate my daughters birthday. The food was very good, and found the staff to be, friendly and attentive. I complimented a member of staff on the level of hygiene, especially the toilets.I simply cannot believe the comments made on this website, about this pub, they are simply not true. I give this pub 5 stars and it's staff. Well done, Boar's Head we will visit you again. [Report for Removal] Mrs Taylor

Well what a place to eat and drink,we had a fantastic time, the staff could not do enough for us. I found the menu extensive and a specals menu that had a wide selection. There were ten of us and because we all decided to have a main course we got 5 bottles of wine for a pound each some of which we took home with us as we could not drink it all and to tell the truth the men liked the beer more. Well done to all the staff not forgetting the chefs.I will be back.[Report for Removal] Angie c

We visit the Boars Head weekly and the staff are all friendly and helpful, the toilets are always in working order and spotlessly clean. We can never find fault with the food and have hardly noticed a price increase in the past 3 years! The weeknight offers for Steaks is excellent and a bottle of wine for £1 is even better (you even get to take it home if you dont manage to drink it all)! We cannot recommend The Boars Head enough! took my son for meal there on Sunday 20/02/2011. What a disappointment! It used to be so good. The staff were rude and confused as to what their role should be. Hygiene was non-existent. The toilets didn't even flush. Prices had been risen but the quality and portion control had reduced. I had a better meal in London at 2/3 of the price. Says it all![Report for Removal] Nicci C

My sister and I took our elderly Mum for a meal last Saturday and had a very good experience. We were sorry that we missed out on the offer of a bottle of wine for £1, that we could have had during the week, - but the food was very good indeed and the waitresses pleasant and helpful. In fact I have just ordered gift vouchers for my fathers birthday as he was unable to attend that night because of illness.[Report for Removal] Janet Andersen.

The service was poor. The beef was tough and when mentioned was told I should have complained earlier. No offer of refund or other compensation. Even had to queue to settle bill. I agree with other comments, very poor overall.[Report for Removal] mel green

Simply put this used to be a nice place to eat but not any more. We arrived at 13:00, were told the table was 'in there', found it ourselves and then we sat for 25 minutes before I managed to attract someone's attention to take our order. After another 10 minutes I then had to ask for bread rolls. The couple who arrived after us (20 minutes) were seated, ordered their food and were served before us, including getting rolls the minute they sat down. The food arrived. Chicken supreme with a bacon wrap 2 of my daughters, 2 cod fillets and a lasagne. The chips served were 2 small bowls - single portions? but when we asked we were told they were for 4. The lady opposite had one bowl to herself. The food arrived. My wife's garden peas were cold, which we pointed out. 5 minutes later a waitress with a serious personality problem arrived with a bowl of peas, ' garden peas' she announced! The cold ones were still on the plate - 'well do you want them?’ she virtually threw them onto the table. We were not offered sauces with the meal and I had to ask for tartare sauce, which arrived eventually. My daughters then pointed out that the chicken was cold. Not being able to catch the waitresses’ eye - the one who 'served' the peas just looked away continually and was very rude. The chicken was taken away and we continued to eat. 15 minutes later we had finished and my daughters meals still had not been served. At this point I had had enough and asked to speak with the owner, not just who was in charge. The head waitress came back and said that the manager was too busy to come to see me but that she would remove the chicken from the bill. I did point out that I had no intention of paying for something that had not been served, apologised to the waitress for having a go at her, but pointed out that this was a meal for my daughter's birthday and that the Boars Head had ruined her day. Meanwhile the chicken had arrived. My wife told them that we had finished our meal, and asked whether there was any point in them eating now, as we would just be sitting watching them eat. The waitresses stood there before one eventually said 'well do you want them now or now, my arm is going to break off if I just stand here!'. I then insisted on seeing the manageress, not the waitress who the manageress was obviously hiding behind, as if 'she (the manageress) was too important to deal with a customer with a complaint'. I pointed out the 'waitress' who was rude then the head waitress disappeared before coming back and saying that the bill had been cleared and there was no charge. Obviously the manageress simply told her to get rid of us. I have brought my children up to be polite and even they pointed out how rude the waitresses were. I am sorry but is the reason that the waitresses behave in such a manner because the manageress is like-minded? Don't eat here. Try the Hand & Trumpet in Betley and then you will know what proper food is and how polite staff can be. It will also prove that some people around Crewe know how to treat customers. Myself and my wife ate lunch there and found the staff cheerful and efficient, but the food left much to be desired. I had steak and mushroom pie with vegetables and new potatoes. the vegetables had obviously been overcooked and left standing, the potatoes were turning black, but the pie was better with lots of meat although with a very thick crust. My wife had rump steak which was overcooked in some sort of gloopy sauce with a skin on top, her salad was soggy and wilting, I have eaten there in the past and been very satisfied, this was definately a deterioration.[Report for Removal] c.stevenson

We were a family of 2 adults and 2 children. We found the food and the experience OK here - not as horrendous, thankfully, as previously described. Bar staff and waitress were friendly, accommodating and attentive - so no complaints there - especially since they had a large group booking also in, & to deal with, at the same time. Food was abit more so-so. Whilst it was hot and tasty (I had the salmon & my partner had the cow pie)it was 'prepared in advance & kept warm' looking. And as other dishes sailed past us on the way to the large group booking, I noted most meat dishes were dark, dark, dark and in heavy gravy....not overly appetising in my somewhat fussy expectations. The vegs were also well overcooked and definitely had been ready for some hours !Our new potatos were very dismal looking. What a pity ! - as there is a farm just down the road from this pub (next to the fishing pit)that has the best new potatos in Britain ! We thought the prices were a little steep too - most were around £10 per dish if you were not selecting off the snack menu (where prices were mostly £5 per dish. And nothing under £8.00 ! The quanity was sufficient though,.....and the coffee was good. In summary - I did not find this place that bad but its not somewhere I'd make a regular booking.[Report for Removal] Jay
