| I have been to this pub several times. It has a good atmosphere and pleasant food. It is a welcome escape from Croydon and very popular. A warm summer evening is the best time to go but a warm fire in a cold winter is good too. | Arrived at the White Bear at approx 4.15 last Sunday afternoon, anticipating a late lunch after a visit to the hospital. Looking for the menu, I was told that the kitchen was closed as they had "run out" and would not re-open until 5.30pm! As we were desperate and had nowhere else to go we waited. menus were put on the tables at 5pm but upon asking were told that we could not order until 5.30pm. Ordered the meals at the bar at 5.30pm but waited and waited until the starters arrived 25 mins later. Still no sign of the main course, so alerted the staff after 40 minutes and was told that it would be another 5 mins! Overall the meal was ok but my curry appeared to consist of leftover vegetables and the naan bread was as crisp as my morning toast. Not a good experience for a pub professing high standards.
