| I was looking forward to going to this pub after moving into the area, and it looks beautiful from the outside- however I found out that looks can be deceiving! on our first night in the village we decided to go for a drink. I found their ale was excellent, so we stayed for another drink and order food. An order of livers and shelled prawns was made, and sitting in the garden, I also heard the order called out. However my wife went in to ask about the food after we had waited approx 40 minutes,even though we were the only ones eating. A waitress came out shortly and apologised, and offered us free drinks. This was excellent service but we declined this offer as we had just purchased another round. The starters came approximately 15 minutes later. Once the food came, we both thought it was very good.As we were haviing such a nice time, the wait did not spoil the meal, and am aware that mistakes can be made. We have since returned for drinks, which we found to be equally good and I was impressed that the ales are changed regularly. However, today my wife phoned me at work and after a long day we thought it would be nice to meet up at the pub for a drink. The first ale purchased was a dark ale, which tasted odd with a chemical taste. For the first time in my life I took back the drink and was given a lighter ale. The barmaid informed us that the beer "might not have been pulled through". We were not charged for the exchange . The second ale came out and had the same after taste. This time I decided just to let my wife finish her drink and then take the beer back. When I went back in I informed a different woman who I do not know if she was the manager as she did not introduce herself to me. I told her that both ales had tasted 'odd'. At that point things went sour as she informed me that it must be my tastebuds. I took that as an insult, as I was not saying the beer was bad but that it tasted odd and I was not asking for another pint. When I informed her that we had previously waited an hour for our meal, she made a comment which implied that this would have been impossible, even though the waitress that had served us that night and had admitted the chef had forgot to cook the food and had also offered us free drinks, was stood next to her but said nothing. After more words I said I was not going to argue further and would leave but would not go back. I was then told "don't come back" After being a head chef for 15 years and now a Food EHO, I really find it insulting to be told that it was my tastebuds, when there was a clear chemical taste. I am a lover of ales both dark and light, and had also had the second ale at another pub the night before and loved it. Which was the reason why I bought it again! The way I was spoken to by the woman is unnacceptable behavior, when all I wanted to do was to inform her that their could be a problem with their beer.[Report for Removal] | douglas hallett fingringhoe essex |

| What a beautiful pub in a stunning setting! We arrived for lunch on Sunday on reccommendation from friends. When we walked in at 1.30pm the restaurant was in full swing and very busy and there was a great atmosphere. Despite it being busy the service however was excellent and our food arrived promtly. The menu was eclectic complemented by a good selection of vegetarian and fresh fish options. On this occasion we decided to forsake starters so that we could have desserts, just as well because with desserts like sticky toffee pudding and Knickerbocker Glory we found ourselves in culinary heaven!!!
