| This is a pleasant 'hotel' bar that poses as a pub. The surroundings are something like 17th century and are genuine, not fake. That said a massive TV in the corner of the bar just ruins the ambience and causes conflict between customers who try to watch it and those who want to get a drink, interupting their view. Excellent bar staff are let down by Best Western who own the hotel who insist the TV be there, but don't recognise the trouble it causes and how it simply ruins what could be a nice bar. The hotel food is good, but crowded conditions in the bar make for a miserable eating experience when busy and waiting staff struggle to use the one and only egress through the bar. Regular customers are soon shoved aside when there is a conference visiting town, so that temporary visitors seem more important than the mainstay regular. It is these factors that make me conclude the bar and therefore the hotel, is below average. If you are prepared to put up with a TV and crushed conditions at times you may enjoy this bar, which is schizoid, not sure whether it's a sports bar or a sophisticated, cultured hotel.[Report for Removal] | Nigel Brown Colchester Essex |
