| Like many people recently; I too have felt utterly let down and disappointed by the quality of food at The Griffin Inn. Or should I say, lack of quality! Twice I ventured to eat there, but never again! The food was utterly disgusting, poor quality and cold. This included a lunchy time Carvery and evening meal. | We have been frequent patrons of The Griffin having lived in Danbury for many years. I was very pleased when I learnt the pub was going to benefit from a refurbishment as it had become very "tired". I was also interested to have a meal there following the change of ownership. Unfortunately I have heard so many disappointing reviews from friends and neighbours who had advised me not to bother as the experience would be a complete waste of money and a huge let down. I have to say that whenever we drive past of an evening the restaurant is far too brightly lit - it certainly does not appear to have the quaint intimacy I enjoyed. The bright lighting reflects off the tablecloths and it looks almost as if the place has been hired out for some kind of function requiring the need for more than adequate lighting. It is such a shame that Danbury's most historical and beautiful coaching inn is now so ridiculed. Maybe someone should send Gordan Ramsey in or someone similar to give some advice! | The Griffin has always been special to us as it was where we went for our first date, where we had our family Christmas lunch to coincide with my father's 70th birthday, and where we always go for a meal on Christmas Eve - which is also our wedding anniversary. We knew it was under new ownership and looked forward to seeing the changes that had been made when we went for our meal on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately we were disappointed in almost every respect. Our booking appeared to have been lost but nevertheless we were shown to a table. The change of decor and lighting made the dining area too harsh and bright. The cosy, intinmate feeling has been completely lost as a result. The staff, (who were young but polite and eager to please) didn't seem to know which table they were meant to be waiting on (we never saw the same person twice)or at which stage we were during our meal. Several times we were asked if we wanted a dessert while we were still waiting for our main. There was very little choice of food and what there was appeared to have been either reheated or kept warm for too long. It was far more expensive than any meal we'd had there before (despite the fact I didn't bother with a dessert)and easily the least enjoyable. When I mentioned our experience to a friend, who also lives locally, she said she'd also had a disappointing meal over the Christmas period and would not be going back. It's such a shame. | We have just had a meal here at lunch time and it was quite possibly the worst meal we have ever eaten. I have never written a review on a site before but this experience was so awful I really feel compelled to warn people! We ordered Ham Egg & Chips, 'Steak' Burger and Fish Fingers Chips & Peas for our daughter. The chips had clearly been recooked in the fryer so many times that they were all brown and totally hard and crunchy with barely any potato left in the middle. I actually had to remove them from my daughters plate because I was concerned she would choke on them! What's more her plate had no peas on but instead a salad and mustard vingarette - who would serve this seeing a one year old at the table? We asked for peas and were given a bowl of fusty carrots which had clearly been sitting around for ages. My husbands burger was foul. There really is no other word for it. We actually thought it was off it tasted so bizarre. My honey roast ham (i.e. ham that had actual honey poured over it so my chips were swimming in it) was mediocre at best. The waiter never even came over to ask if everything was ok. We were in a hurry so left as soon as we could but I have never been so glad that we decided to skip the starter. It takes more than some wine glasses and few high back faux leather chairs to make a "fine dining experience" - as laughably quoted in The Griffins advert in a local paper that was left on the table. | I visited the Griffin in Danbury for lunch with some of my family between Christmas and new year and was extremely disappointed. Two of us ordered the chicken and mushroom pie and mash and one of us ordered the steak and kidney pie with chips. All the pies were not homemade clearly, they reminded me of the pies you can get from the frozen foods section of a supermarket. The steak and kidney pie did not have any kidneys in it and the chips were frozen oven chips. The vegetables were cold and had clearly been sitting around for quite sometime. When we complained, the member of staff at the bar shrugged her shoulders and said that the food is all homemade which was a lie. There was no apology and they simply did not seem to care. Having said that, the young lads that served us were nice. It is such a shame because we used to eat their from time to time under previous ownership and the food was nice. We will not be returning and will spread the word. I am not usually one to complain using review sites but I was so appolled by the food and the reaction to our complaint that I felt that it would be necessary to try to prevent others from suffering a similar experience.[Report for Removal] | B.G.B Maldon Essex |

| We booked christmas lunch in the carvery, this was the worst meal I have ever been served in a restaurant! The carvery was staffed by one lone young man who was supposed to greet guests, serve drinks, clear tables and serve food from the carvery. The food was stone cold and dried up and serveral items had run out. When we complained the staff did not apologise or try to help, just very rude and arrogant particulary the manager. | We ate there recently at the carvery.The plates were cold, the vegetables hard and the meal cold.There was only one ladle in use and dumped in the vegetables.The server had no interest.We had to have coats hanging over the chairs and window table very cold and cramped.I emailed them and received nothing but abuse I was also told to eat in future at McDonalds!Their response was full of lies and never once took any responibility, we too would never eat there again-having said that they have also barred us for daring to complain. I didn't refer to Mcdonalds so I am at a loss as to why she has!! The only place I have eaten recently at Boreham is The Lion. Which was very nice. This is a review site and comments should be soley about the pub. Further to my review of The Griffin the young staff on the night although inexperienced were trying very hard and were very friendly and this was reflected in my tip. | I spent saturday night also at this pub with my hubby, actually sitting next to Mrs Cavill and her husband and to the side of the new owners who were there with their children having a family meal. We also had a great evening and thought it was nice to actually see the new owners turn out to support their new venture when they are obviously busy people. Mrs Cavill had the opportunity to address her concerns with the Manager who was floating around all night from table to table along with the assistant manager Dan who was also on duty and waiting on the tables with other staff. It is such a shame that some people in this village cannot "move" on and take on board the wonderful changes that have been put in place and the new lease of life that has been brought back to our village pub. | We ate the Griffin last night hopeful that with new owners there would be a vast improvement, however we were disappointed. The food was average and service towards the end of the meal was slow. Had the restaurant manager been managing the restaurant instead of chatting to the new owners who got far better service than we did, things might have been better. | I visited The Griffin, this evening, and found it very welcoming, its hard to fnd a traditional good "old local booser" the suroundings are litterally perfect, with the georgeous veiws as well as the history that goes with this 15th century inn, I felt as tho i was being transported back with the huge open fire places and many things to read inside the pub, the menu seems adequate to the pub although did not try the food, as i had unfortunatley eaten but would definatley look forward to going back and sampling the delights the Griffin has to offer, I understand that there will be new owners soon, and looking at the other reviews on here, i think the food has previusly let the pub down, so i am sure that they will look and act accordingly on this and make the griffin as to what it needs to get back to. | same as the rest of our group, we have had the best night in this country pub over the past weekend! the bar staff were the very best hosts you could imagine. we had a birthday party there, the staff sectioned off a part of the food/bar area and provided the very best food and wine. | Visit The Griffin if you want a 'do it yourself' meal in a restaurant. Disinterested and uninformed waiting staff, long waiting times for food, table piled high with dirty plates, glasses and condiments. Not to forget the long list of food unavailable they forget to mention when you ordered! Get your own drinks and find your own desert menu. Don't complain to the manger, who has has no customer service skills whatsoever and really doesn't care that a special celebration evening was ruined. He just hopes you 'will give us another chance sometime'!!!! Advice if you really are desperate is to set up a tab at the bar which will give a little room for for negotiation when you are dissatisfied.
