My brother and I visited this nice looking pub on Saturday lunchtime. It was strangely empty but we decided to stay for the steak and ale pie, as we were promised it was fresh. The pies arrived sooner than expected. A disapointing, watery stew in a bowl with a puff pastry lid. The vegetables certainly were not fresh, the carrots were dry and cracked and the chips were obviously a frozen variety. The meat was poor quality, fatty and tasteless. Worst of all, cold in the middle. I don't like to complain but this can cause food poisoning. A burly man came out of the kitchen using the most foul language to decribe why he can't get rid of his nephew as it's his sister's pub. The pies were replaced along with the dire vegetables. Upon finding a long grey hair in his pie, my brother had had enough. The young waitress was very apologetic, but when the owner came out she demanded to see the hair. We'd thrown it outside, noticing the owners hair was exactly the same! She became furious accusing us of taking the piss as she does 200 pies a week and no complaints. I said we never actually complained about the pie, just that it was cold. She stormed off with our plates saying we should take our money back and f##k off! We were gobsmacked and lost for words. We never asked for our money back but after hearing that abuse, we took it and left in a state of shock. At least now we know why the pub was empty![Report for Removal] Alan

My wife and I together with our two adult children, booked for Sunday lunch in early March 2009. The one solitary barman (landlord?) was surly and uninterested in us. We eventually managed to get somebodys attention and was given a table in the restaurant, albeit minus one chair. After this we were totally ingnored, the invisible family even! They were obviously very busy but had lots of staff buzzing around serving other tables. After fifteen minutes I decided to get some drinks from the bar, as nobody had offered us any. We then waited and waited until a couple on the next table came in about thirty minutes later and got served at once. We then of course called somebody over and they got in a huff..."The kitchen is very busy you know" We asked if there was an alternative roast, turkey perhaps as we had been told on the phone when booking. "It's on the board, beef and pork, can you see?"....Right, Yes..... The food was ok but nothing special, meat rather chewy. We had one dish of veg between four, while the two people on the next table apeared to have the same dish between them. The desserts came from a frozen something purchased at the cash and carry. I found this pub very disappointing and unfriendly, they seemed much more interested in their regulars. Shepherd and Neame should address this as a matter of urgency with better training for the management, who's attitude will unfortunately be reflected in their staff.
