| Well, having heard so much hype after the renovation, and joining their 'VIP' club, my husband and I decided to pay them a visit for Sunday lunch. The garden is superb, catering mainly for children as it always has done, and the interior design is both visually pleasing and comfortable. The staff are friendly and welcoming, so no complaints there. It all started to go downhill when we ordered drinks. A glass of rose and a pint of lager shandy came to £8.60, competing with London prices. Our roasts were served with no spoons for either the vegetables nor the apple sauce, and I noticed that the couple on the next table were not provided with steak knives, so obviously there is a cutlery problem. The food itself was reasonably priced but unexceptional, bordering on tasteless. The veg had obviously been sitting around as the peas and beans were dark green though the carrots were ok. In all the veg was uninspiring to say the least. The 'roast' potatoes were clearly not roasted, but slightly underdone boiled ones that had been brushed with colour, in fact my husband, a renowned big eater left his. The Yorkshire pudding, even though resplendent in it's size was dry and tasteless, a larger boat of 'proper' gravy, rather than the pale and insipid tiny boat of thickened stock might have helped. The desserts I saw coming out did look very tempting, but unfortunately after the lack lustre dinner and inflated bar prices we decided not to part with another £4.50 each and retired to the Nags Head with a lovely glass of wine and a proper pint for £2.00 less. We have booked to eat there next week, and after sampling a free roast potato from 'Mien Host,' think that may become our regular Sunday jaunt from now on.[Report for Removal] | Helen Pepper Billericay Essex |
