| A very popular traditional country pub with a reputation for good food and a wide range of well kept real ales. Otley OBB has been added to the range recently and is a welcome addition.The rustic interior features a cosy separate restaurant area and a bar area with a real fire. There is usually live music on Friday and some Saturday nights. Best enjoyed after a country walk and its location offers plenty of opportunities for those, even if it is a short stroll across the stepping stones to the pretty village of Merthyr Mawr. So, whether you want a sit down meal in nice surroundings, an excuse for a country walk or just escape the tensions of the week with some live music thrown in ,then the Pelican does offer something for everyone(never easy to be all things to all men, but it comes close). It isn't the cheapest place to eat and drink. But with reports that some 40-60 pubs a week are closing then if you value quality traditional British pubs it is probably worth paying a bit extra to ensure their survival. As ever there is a balance and the customer ultimately chooses how much they are prepared to spend on what is, after all, a non essential leisure activity. Bottom line ,if you are looking for a nice country pub for a drink or meal, give the Peli a go.
