| used to go in here a lot, way back when it was popular. was always busy and the owners loved nothing better than alienating people, throwing people out just because their face didnt fit and barring folk whenever it suited. they are paying the price now - they hardly have any customers. whats the old saying "what goes around comes around" be rude to your customers (your "lifeblood") and they just wont come back. It might seem funny at the time to be rude to people but its not so funny when the till stops ringing (well it is for the customers you upset - they just go and put their cash in someone elses till). | visited a few weeks ago for the first time in about 18 or so months and was shocked to hear that manager\dj martin had left, then delighted to find out that martin and his partner joe now run the very popular candlestick in nearby whitehaven! whilst at the steampacket i was made to feel very uneasy by a sleazy man who i was then informed was the owners partner, the only nice thing i can say about the 'new' steampacket (as its now being labled, such a joke) is some(not many) of the old regulars are still there for a good crack. would be so much better if martin was to return and whilst on the subject of returns, would be great to see marcus back at helm instead of paul.[Report for Removal] | barrowboy barrow cumbria |

| I like this pub because it is so quiet. Never seen more than 20 people in at a time and that is what I love about. You can hear yourself think and also you are not constantly getting banged into too in the way that happens in busy places. Food is good too and the atmosphere is friendly. | I am so gutted at how they have allowed this pub to run down. My friend told me how rude the owners partner had been to him and vowed that now he will never set foot in the place again. You don't expect to be treated rudely anywhere, especially after spending your hard earned cash in the place. Also it seems to have lost most of it's regulars, in fact over 90% of them. I know times are hard for bars at the moment but I think in this case it's customer service that drives people away. As in any business it is the customer who is king - upset the customer and you and your staff have no future, you will drive them all away and remember that on average a dissappointed customer will tell at least 14 other people and word soon spreads. | was staying in hotel in workington as i was going racing at rowrah the morning aft. was browsing my laptop and looked at this site at local pubs. from the reviews i read i just had to pop to this pub. its a nice looking place and i went in. first time i ever went in a gay pub so why not (im not gay btw) i ordered a pint of lager and i was served by a very pleasant and polite bar man. i asked if he had any nuts and he made a rather funny joke which i often chuckle about. i sat and had a couple of pints and i have to say that i enjoyed myself. no problems at all. even though it is a gay pub they do welcome and are very hospitable towards normal people too. definately worth popping in for a pint.[Report for Removal] | Gordon McAveney Dumfries Scotland |

| This pub is located in a quiet area of Workington, near the old docks. Although billed as a gay pub the customers come from all walks off life and generally is an attitude free pub. In addition to its regular gay clientele, the pub also attracts a straight clientele.I am told that hen parties are a frequent feature here. The atmosphere when I went was fairly chiled out and relaxed. The pub sits on its own and there is plenty of car parking space. On entering the pub the first thing that strikes you is that it is not your typical gay bar (with trendy furniture, high celings and cafe bar style frontage). The pub is more of a traditional type northern establishment. The bar is located in the middle of the pub and has stools around it. There are also lower tables and chairs around the pub. Quieter seating areas also in abundance. There is a small stage and dance floor and I am told that most weekends there is entertainment and the dance floor gets well used. There is a pool table (FREE!!), and gaming machines. Apparently they do roasts on a sunday afternoon. Out the back there is a smoking area which has a canopy roof. The Steam Packet is open till 2am at weekends. All in all we enjoyed our visit to this pub and would go again. | I felt very scared and a bit anxious the first time I went in but my friend assured me that would pass and things would be fine. I am sorry but after the way some of the staff and punters were about people (making snide comments about what they wore, their clothes, their weight, their partner, their age in fact anything) and seeing people who go off with other people behind their partners backs and the insults not to mention the seedyness of the place, I vowed I would never go back there and I wont. | i have to agree. it was good when it first opened but its lost its way. i know that bitching goes on in other gay scenes but here the people are downright rude and offensive. the "small group of in crowd" live in a false sense of security and think its okay to be rude to people. maybe it is a false sense of security because currently they have a partner whereas if they lived elsewhere they probably wouldnt have. these days there is no real need to have to go to a gay bar just because u are gay and a lot of Cumbrians have realsied this. the DJ also has the title of manager and has no imagination or flair and when it comes to looking after customers scores a complete zero. same old tunes all the time (quite depressing music most of the time). they charge club prices to get in when there is an act on. when the management arent arguing and slagging each other off they are slagging customers off. it really is not a good place to be and that is why i dont bother anymore. they are never busy in fact usually it is dead in there but they dont seem to ask themselves WHY. give it a wide berth in my opinion. the most regular regulars seem to live upstairs.[Report for Removal] | steve flimby cumbria |

| I like this pub but lately it seems the bitching and teasing has got out of control, now i find it an uncomfortable place to be. Its like your standing at the bar just waiting for the next insult to fly your way, esp if your face doesnt fit or your not with the "in crowd". The steampacket is just a pub afterall but it`s becomming increasingly controlling and powerweilding over vunerable people....because they have the monopoly on the gay scene,and people go there cos theres no other gay space, therefore they have a captive audience to do whatever they want with.....including humiliating experiences. Dont get me wrong I love banter, but when it leads to the customer feeling hurt and insulted then its no longer fun to go there. This is just a pub and you shouldnt be made to feel you have to spill the gossip about yourself everytime you go there. I dont know if this is me or is the pub becomming a magnet for straight women???? I understand we should integrate and that the straight community helps to keep the pub going, but i dont want to be in a zoo where large groups of heterosexual people come to oggle at the poofs at play, I can go to yankees for that. Ole packet seems to be loosing its identity. The humiliating experiences are driving the gay community away and the heterosexuals are filling the gap. The staff and requlars are rude, offensive and don't have a good word to say about no one, including each other, The decent folk have all dissapeared because of the gossiping and back stabbing that goes on! The dj thats stuffed into the dj box is stuck in a time warp and has been playing the same records for the past 5yrs (with the exception of that lass who occasionlly djs think she's called manda, someone's already mentioned her). | Two reviews about the Steam Packet from People who have never been over the threshold, both with 5 red stars. One from a guy who rates the pub as 5 red stars but who is attending a future function - if its that bad??? And 5 red stars from the guy who originated the review but has never been back. Well I have been back, recent changes include a brand new kitchen and buffet serving area, a very comfortable outside smoking area, and of course first class artistes every other week, Alfie was exceptional last Saturday. | As I think someone has said, this is a review site. If you have'nt been to The Steam Packet the how can you judge it ??? I suspect that those that have given it a bad review are just being malicious or have a grudge (maybe because it caters for the gay community perhaps) and I would say that if you are unhappy with any aspect of this pub or indeed if you have any suggestions then you tell Martin, Marcus or Paul who will always listen. As far as I am concerned this pub is fabulous and all visitors are made to feel very welcome (in fact I would go as far to say that they can not do enough for the punters). On a regular basis enetertainment is provided which is much appreciated by all customers, gay and straight (and those unsure) alike. I go to this pub because it is a great pub and not because it is a gay pub. | I have now frequented the said tavern for far more years then I care to remember. As both closeted and now out loud and proud. I am extremely fortunate to have a very wide circle of friends in the Packet and indeed am classed as being part of the fixtures and fittings. I am normally found on a bar stool beside the bar flap entrance and am proud to be associated with the Steam Packet. I have been in quite a few gay bars in my time and as Dorothy said "theres no place like home". So Paul, Marcus and Martin thankyou for the hospitality, the support through times good and bad, the drinks, the entertainment and of course the music, for giving them not only to me but to anyone who crosses the threshold. | STAFF = Overall they are friendly enough (as in all pubs you are bound to get the odd bad apple). PRICES = Reasonable. Not overpriced at all. Decor = Clean, traditional pub feel to it. Entertainment = DJ at the weekend and sometimes live act on stage. (The best night to go is when Manda is DJing). Busy Nights = Saturdays (Rest of the week it is hit and miss, sometimes busy sometimes not - like all pubs really). Regulars = Lesbian and Gay predominantly. | I have recently returned to Cumbria having been out of the county for nearly 18 years studying, working and living in London and in Sheffield. As you can imagine I underwent a severe spate of culture shock having enjoyed the extremely well developed facilities for LGBT people in London and in Sheffield. However I thank the higher powers (if indeed they exist) for The Steam Packet Inn in Workington. It is an oasis in the otherwise bleak dessert of straight unfriendly, rough bars which are all too common in Cumbria. As a gay man I have always felt at home and a sense of belonging in the "Packet". Indeed it was a group of regulars including staff members began GAY CUMBRIA, the website initially and then later the community organisation. As the only gay pub in Cumbria it is going to be impossible to do a one size fits all number, but I do think that the staff do there best to accommodate the needs of the punters and I do applaud Marcus, Paul and Martin for providing a service to that community for the past 14 years where no one else has bothered to take up the mantle!!! | i only went to the steam packet twice and i thought it was okay and friendly enough. my friend tom took me and he has written a bad review of it. his judgement is clouded because his ex was in there and they fell out and someone made a joke because of one hand being smaller than the other one (it wasnt even nasty but he just overeacted). i would go here again but the only problem is that its too far for me but i enjoyed myself[Report for Removal] | ryan keswick cumbria |

| This is a great pub. The staff really look after you and there is often entertainment on. Even though it is the only "gay pub" in Cumbria it has a very "local" feel to it. The staff are friendly and the service is great. There is never any trouble (that I am aware of) in this pub and I would say that is one of the few places you can go out in Workington without feeling threatened or tense. Despite being "gay" a lot of the Steam Packets' regulars are straight. It is a complete attitude free venue where all are made to feel welcome. There is banter and there is slagging off but just having returned from Blackpool I saw no difference there to here!? Friendly and welcoming, well managed, great bar staff, great hosts, great music, great company, great entertainment and a fantastic night out. What more could anyone want for a night out. | glad there is somewhere to comment on pubs. this place is vile and like the writer below I found the staff and regular customers to be awful. they slag people off both to their face and behind there back. they even joke about people who are ill and im sure that is an offence under the disability discrimination act. this is the only gay bar in Cumbria but a lot of gay people I know wont go there .... | I have been to this pub twice now and I have to say that it was not a pleasant experience. It is supposed to be a gay pub so you would imagine that it would be a fun attitude free place to go. Not at all the staff are always gossiping and running people dpwn behind their backs and the drinks are overpriced. The music is cheesy and the jokes are more mickey taking than funny.
