| It is so nice to find a pub which really does welcome dogs. We visited on 15 November 2008 (actually, we went in the night before and partook of some well kept real ales and asked if we could book a table for 4 people and 2 dogs for the Saturday evening). When we arrived there was a table already laid for us with a reserved sign on it (it was in the back room, which I don't object to. A lot of non-dog owners don't want to share their dining room with my furry friend). The young girls who were waiting on were lovely. The food was excellent, it isn't cheap but it is good sized portions and excellent quality. If I had to complain about something it would be the VAST choice on the menu and specials board. After finally managing to narrow my choice down to order my food, my attention was drawn to the specials board - creating ANOTHER quandary. The food is superb, the pub and toilets are clean, the beer is well kept, the welcome is warm, you can probably tell I would return to this pub and highly recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in the area and looking for somewhere for a quiet drink or something to eat. After a hard days walking in the Forest of Bowland, a welcome watering hole.[Report for Removal] | Margaret Parminter York North Yorkshire |

| I visited this pub with a friend just over a week ago (1st August 2007). It once had a really good reputation for its food but that was years ago and things have changed dramatically for the worse. The first person we met was the barman who was surly to say the least. The drinks were expensive; a pint of lager and a smoothie cost almost £5 and there was no thank you when I handed over the cash. When we decided on our food we had to pay up front. The next thing that arrived was the cutlery which was quite literally thrown at us onto the table without a word from the waitress. The food when it arrived was disgustingly awful. I'd chosen prawn pir piri which consisted of the smallest of prawns swimming around in a watery sauce and a minute amount of a rather sad looking salad. My friend was equally disappointed with her sausage with cheese melt baguette. The sausage was minute and the cheese more slimy than anything else. We weren't asked if we were enjoying our meal. Needless to say, we won't be going back to the Assheton Arms at Downham and shall be making sure that all our friends are warned against the place too.
