Stayed at The Ship this weekend when attending a wedding in nearby Bourton and NOT impressed. extremely slow dithering and amateurish service. Heard farcas with other guests about a deposit that hotel said had not been paid as it was beife current managers took over! Nice enough people but they need some training. It took three requets to get coffee. Anopther guest told me that it had taken an hour andf a half to get breakfast the day before - so I guess oooour half hour wait was an improvement!! Locals in opub very unfriendly![Report for Removal] chris hobson

Reviews have been suspended for this establishment as we found the system was being abused, the 3 reviews that were all positive were placed from the same IP address using newly created hotmail.co.uk accounts, which leads us to think they were not genuine and so were removed. We have sent emails to the "three" reviewers and asked for a landline number in order to call them to confirm their validity. Should they answer and confirm their identitiies we will re-instate reviews for this establishment. We should point out that we have only had to do this on 4 occasions over the last 5 years, when people have tried to abuse our reviews system. It is true that fully paid up members have the ability to read their reviews prior to publication and can add a reply within the body of the review. Our researchers try and check all reviews that do not get confirmed and each day our system produces a list of 'suspicious' reviews based upon IP addresses or Email from free email address suppliers such as Hotmail, Google Mail etc. [Report for Removal] Pubsulike - Southern Office

After the last three reviews, the management of this hotel contacted previous guests who had enjoyed their stay but hadn't known about this site to pass comment. Now it would appear that positive comments are not allowed to be seen by other internet users. Is this right? Is this fair? Or can positive comments only be seen towards those pubs and hotels who pay the owner of this site for its use, and those hotels which dont even wish to be part of this site are only allowed negative reviews?[Report for Removal] Edward Harry Brister

Upon arrival at 16.00 which was the checking in time there was no-one to be seen. The carpark seemed like it could do with a tidy up/rubbish etc. After entering the hotel things seemed a bit disserted. We rang the bell and still no-one came. I then rang the hotel from a mobile phone and the the hotel manageress appeared and to be fair she seemed pleasant and helpful, although i think she could have been wearing more professional attire. I carried our heavy suitcases to our room which seemed ok and clean, although no tv which i would have thought in this day and age was a given. The next morning we had no hot water which was a pain and the plumbing seemed to gurgle all night! We then went down to breakfast and the manageress kind of made us feel we were putting her out a bit having to ask for breakfast. I would have thought there should be a menu or something. She then went out to buy supplies and we did eventually get breakfast which was ok. It could of done with being bit hotter (note: hot plates!).We still had no water the second night and had to boil the kettle 10 times to keep it warm, which was not great.I think the idea of making an old country pub into a kind of modern american diner doesnt work in my opinion. The old beams and wooden floors should be kept in tact. Our room was nice and was kept in character and a i think the whole place should be like that. On our final check we meet a guy dressed in a suit (the manager maybe?) who seemed ok and professional (a shame he wasnt there to start with) [Report for Removal] Mr Honeybun

We booked 1 double and 1 large double for 2 nights. On arrival, which was after 6pm, our large double wasn't even made up. The restaurant manager was highly embarrassed but was very professional - she was the best part of the Inn! We were given another room which was a simple double and had to ask for a reduction on the bill. No tv but a tv wall stand and aerial! Sorry but I'm not a tv addict but I do like to hear the news and find out what the weather is doing (not to mention watching some of the winter olympics). No hot water at first but obviously someone decided to turn that on. The mirrow on the wardrobe was in desperate need of a clean. We had arranged to meet family in the restaurant for dinner - were told (but only as we rang up to book a table) a couple of days beforehand that the restaurant was being renovated - by the time we went it was already over a week overdue and didn't even look close to being completed. The bar area didn't feel like a nice cosy country pub despite the log fire. The starter of mackeral was gorgeous but the rest wasn't quite up to it but there was quite a few of us so gave them the benefit of the doubt. They had problems with their credit card machine so had to pay cash (8 of us for dinner so not a small amount but they were quick to mention the cash point just round the corner!). For breakfast we were asked what we wanted it would have been better to either to have a menue of what was available or at least be told. I only asked for toast and some marmalade but was told they thought they had some and wasn't offered brown or white! I was given 3 slices of toast on a plate with packets of jam! Sorry but marmalade is standard british breakfast fare and if you don't have it you should at least apologise! My husband and daughter both had cooked breakfast but they were swimming in grease, so much so that my daughter tried to mop some of it up with the waxy serviette. By this time we found the whole experience funny as it was like staying at Fawlty Towers! We made sure we didn't rush back that evening as there wasn't much to do in the room nor did you feel you could while away the hours in the bar. My daughter had trouble getting to sleep after 11pm due to the music being played very loudly in the bar. The manager asked if it had disturbed us the following morning but he didn't even apologise when she said it did. The manager should try not to play his cd on musicals so loud in the bar at breakfast time as it's a little annoying. When we came to check-out despite the manager seeing us walk down with our bags as well as the cleaning couple of women(I use the term cleaning loosely) no-one seemed interested in checking us out and as they had taken our credit card details we presumed they would charge the balance to our card. Wrong, the manager got one of the cleaning ladies to come and get us and then even had the nerve to ask us to pay cash - we didn't! This could be a lovely little gold mine but the staff need to learn from the restaurant manager as she obviously knows the trade so much better than the other staff we came across. Just by making some simple improvements that won't even cost the earth could makeall the difference. To be honest it gave the impression that they were fast running out of money and were desperate for cash - we don't think it will be open in the summer! We could have complained but what was the point - we tried to see the funny side but we certainly won't be going back. [Report for Removal] unhappy visitor from tripadvisor

As the owner of Pubsulike I feel I should point out, that the reason that the management of The Old Ship Hotel cannot amend their reviews is that they have not renewed their annual subscription. Mr Bocker has been in touch with me and I have seen the evidence of his grievance, I have also been in touch with a number of landlords and ex-landlords in the area and I feel that some of the negative reviews are justified.[Report for Removal] Graham Jones - Pubsulike

In respect to the previous two postings the management of the hotel now feel that as we cannot remove these reviews as the Web Site Master will not reply to our communications. Mr Bocker with all due respect you are a previous employee who chose to move home and then as you could not fullfill our desired shift plans had to receive reduced hours and then descided to leave. This is not the fault of the hotel and your statements are based on supposition and no hard fact. The other review is written by a local competitor. Since i have been manager for over 12 months i have never seen a brawl occur at the Ship Hotel. As for loud loutish behaviour our customers are encouraged to leave quietly and it must be reminded to the customer that there are 4 drinking establishments in this town and ours is not the only one to serve alchol. Please bare my points in mind when reading the reviews on this site.[Report for Removal] Edward Brister

The customer service was bad apart from the friendly service of the new restaurant manager. Dinner was burnt and the breakfast was swimming in oil. One of our rooms were not ready when we got to the hotel even though it was gone 6.30 in the evening and we were down graded to a smaller room that was clean. The second morning of staying there I had no hot water coming from my shower, which wouldn't have been so bad if the heating in my room was on (it was so cold it had snowed over night so some heating would have been nice)!!! We were more than happy to leave at the end of our stay[Report for Removal] Christine Weatherburn

Not impressed. The once lovely old hotel has become a cheap drinks, late night hang out for rowdy youths. The 'Entertainments Manager' is rude and unprofessional in his dealings with customers. The frequent car park brawls and loutish behaviour of drunken youths is also a turn off. A better name for this place would be 'The Sinking Ship.' [Report for Removal] Susan McKinlay

i recently ate at the ship and to say the least found the menu very limited and was most shocked to find that the specials had not changed from the first time i ate there a couple of months ago. The bar staff seem to change everytime you go in the place and there is lots of attention being made around the pub but not where needed , i had to wait ages for a drink and had i not of already ordered my food i would have left early ... hugely dissappointed ....
