Although I have friends in St. Albans and we have often visited pubs in the Harpenden area this name was not familiar to me when I visited this website last week. Anyway I contacted my friend and he did a bit of research. It appears the pub has been subjected to a number of name and image changes over the years. Someone told him it may have been called “Hooden the Horse”. The mane may be linked to the Harpenden Races held there prior to WWI! It turns out I we went there a few years ago when it was trading as the “Rose and Crown”. The restaurant part was well thought of but the pub half was more like a wine bar with a selection of lagers rather than ales. Since then it has been re-lauched as the “Rose & Crown Basmati Rice” restaurant so it does not even make pretence at being a pub anymore.[Report for Removal] David P
