The Royal Oak scored a first among local pubs in 1997 when it opened a totally organic pub-restaurant. And this is just one of the reasons for seeking out this little gem of a village pub. A short detour from the main road that snakes through the picture-postcard village of Bishopstone, you could be excused for thinking that time has stood still at The Royal Oak since it was built around 200 years ago. In fact, The Royal Oak has a chequered history and it wasn't until Arkell's acquired the pub in 1951 that it was transformed into what it is today - one of the most attractive village pubs you are ever likely to find. A string of different breweries have owned The Royal Oak over the years and almost all are now lost - either as a result of bankruptcy or absorption by takeovers and mergers. It meant that the pub was badly neglected for much of its life - so much so that in 1907 Magistrates reported that it was "smelly, with bad thatch, low roof and bulging walls". But if The Royal Oak is at last enjoying its heyday, it's a comfortable one. Its location down an anonymous country lane (opposite the village school) means that here is one of those pubs that is always waiting to be discovered - either by Swindon residents exploring the surrounding countryside or by walkers taking a detour from the nearby Ridgeway path. The Royal Oak now has Bed and Breakfast facilities available - one double room and one twin room. There's always something going on at the Royal Oak to entertain you so see the what's on box (left) for upcoming events.
