Originally a beerhouse, The Plough was built in 1841 by private landlord Thomas Ackling on the Lechlade road at Highworth. The inn and the adjoining cottage stands on the site of eight earlier cottages which must have been of near doll's house proportions as the pub has the distinction of being Arkell's smallest. Ackling owned The Plough until 1873 when it was bought by the Star Brewery of Stratton St Margaret and when that business folded in 1896, it was the only one of the 15 properties on offer to be bought by Arkell's. It cost them £960. Offering overnight accommodation and a hearty welcome together with some of the best pub food to be found in the county, The Plough remains one of Arkell's most popular establishments.
