Cricklade's motto is "In loco delicioso" ("In a delightful place") and its wide High Street is a pleasant centrepiece. No two buildings are the same, yet still The Old Bear manages to stand out, looking for all the world like an old-fashioned cottage which the owners have suddenly decided to throw open to drinkers and hotel guests. In fact, The Old Bear has a longer history than most pubs in the area. The earliest building on the site was occupied in 1697 and by 1786 it was trading as The Saracen's Head. The name later changed to The Bear and at an unknown date the 'Old' was added, just in case the place's pedigree was in doubt. Only five doors from Arkell's other Cricklade pub, the imposing White Hart, The Old Bear could hardly be more different in character. It promises none of the grandeur of its neighbour and if you are looking for a simple pub with a modest outlook on life, you've found it.
