You have to admit that old Sally Pussey looks like she was a stern landlady. Her picture on the sign outside and on the wall inside certainly indicate that she was a formidable local personality. Her real name was Sarah Purse and the name that has survived is a colloquial rendition of it. The Purse family kept the pub from at least 1841 until 1885 and it was then known as The Wheatsheaf and formed part of the Bolingbroke estate which also included Lydiard House. Its address is Wickfield, though the now greatly expanded town of Wootton Bassett has crept almost up to the Sally Pussey's doorstep and the pub stands close to the busy main road from Swindon.
