Stratton St Margaret's fine old Wheatsheaf is now a Grade II Listed building. Not that it has needed any protection since it was bought by Arkell's in 1869. It has been modernised, of course - the last time on its 101st birthday - but the policy has always been to preserve this fine old pub rather than change it. Some things have to change, of course. When The Wheatsheaf first opened its doors in 1834 the licensee was a Richard White who paid one shilling (5p) a week for the lease. In those days, Stratton was a sleepy rural parish and The Wheatsheaf was surrounded by cottages, including six at the rear on what is now the pub's car park. No longer a typical village pub, The Wheatsheaf passes as a 'town local' in some guides, though that does not recognise its attraction for those seeking quality bar meals - a fact especially obvious at weekends when it can get very busy in the cosy lounge. The current licensee is Alun Rossiter who has had a long association with Swindon's speedway team, the Robins.
