"It's like a museum," say the landlords, and they're right. Ye Olde Red Lion is a fascinating pub by any standards where you go not so much for a visit as an experience. A lease dated 1782 still survives, so the building is at least 200 years and possibly more, but it hasn't always been a pub. At first, the building was occupied by a blacksmith's and after the late 1800s combined blacksmithing with the licensed trade. It was bought by Arkell's in 1992. Note how the pub has two distinct sections - now knocked through to make the present day pub. The car park, by the way, used to be the local duck pond! The only ducks at Ye Olde Red Lion now will be the ones on the menus along with well over 100 other items at the last count. Diners can choose from the full a la carte or the bar menu and all tastes are catered for, including children's because this is very much a family pub that attracts customers over a range of age groups. You may also get to meet the pub ghost - a gentleman with a flat cap who sits at the bar and has been seen through the windows of the pub when it is closed... and when the pub was thought to be empty. With its comfy sofas and open fires, Ye Olde Red Lion is as attractive on the inside as it is on the outside and is brimming over with bric-a-brac which the current licensees have raided attics and junk shops for. A museum indeed - though we know of no other museums with such a reputation for its food and its beer!
