If The Red Lion looks like the perfect example of one of those old coaching inns, then all is not quite what it seems. Old it certainly is. But after a complete refit in 2004, this traditional Arkell's establishment now offers all the modern facilities expected of today's pub-goers, with a new contemporary dining area, games room and open plan bar. The Red Lion's accommodation facilities has also been completely up-dated and include three superbly appointed rooms, 1 family plus 2 twin rooms, two of which are en-suite. Looking back at its rich history, a Lion Inn is recorded in Lechlade High Street from 1592 and is almost certainly what we now call The Red Lion, though it is uncertain when the Lion turned red. Parts of the current building is probably late 17th century, though it was much altered in the middle of the 19th century. If you look hard enough you will find a plaque on one of the outside walls dated 1843 - ironically the year that John Arkell first began brewing beer, though it wasn't bought by John Arkell until 1874. The impressive throughway (which leads to the car park) may look like it is an old carriage archway, but in fact it was formerly an entrance to a shop because this was formerly three different properties. Trying to spot where the three bits join together is part of the fun on a visit to The Red Lion. Choosing your lunch or supper from a varied menu is just one of the other pleasures.
