The Wild Deer was possibly one of the last pubs in Wiltshire to be built to service the needs of passing barges. The year was 1847 and the Wilts and Berks Canal which ran a stone's throw from the back of the Wild Deer was soon to be rendered obsolete by the railway. This is perhaps why the pub was passed through the hands of a succession of owners before it was finally sold to Arkell's in February, 1872. By then Swindon was extending to accommodate the growth of its railway works and it was, indeed, railwaymen, not bargemen, who sought refreshment at The Wild Deer. The property, which formerly included a cottage at the rear, was modernised in 1959 and refurbished in 1989, but as an honest little town pub with no airs and graces, its character has never really changed over the years
