| I stumbled upon this true little gem last weekend, after recently moving into the area. The staff are very friendly and the food is good and reasonably priced, unfortunately only open in the evenings. I beleave it has recently been closed and has undergone a refurbishment, it looks great! The oak floors, real log fires and unusual antiques all add to the charm and character of this lovely country pub - will be returning soon.[Report for Removal] | mrs. h. price longnor derbyshire |

| I've never had a bad meal at this pub. Always great food, and friendly attentive service. I've taken my young kids in here before and always found everyone at the pub to be very accommodating. They have high-chairs and they give free vegetables to babies. It seems some people seem content to let their kids run riot and spoil things for everyone else! I highly recommend this pub whether you are taking the kids or not. Great food, atmosphere and service *****[Report for Removal] | N Baker Ashbourne Derbyshire |

| I feel so strongly about the Red Lion at Thorncliffe that I had to post to tell others of our bad experience. We had dinner there last weekend and if it were not for the fact that we were with eight other famly members we would have walked out. We were told that it did not cater for small children when we tried to change our son and if we wanted to change his nappy we should do so in the car. Whilst I fully appreciate that others might find this acceptable firstly we had booked the meal in advance and secondly they had given us a highchair. If they are not child friendly they should have told us and saved us the trip. The landlady/manageress was incredibly rude to us and from reading other reviews here it appears this was not just her having a bad day. My aunt had to pay a £5 deposit for each person when she made the booking (never heard of a pub doing that before) and to be honest the food was ok but nothing to write home about. To be fair to the rest of the staff, they were very polite but I would not return.[Report for Removal] | C Smith Bishops Stortford Herts |

| My husband and I had a meal at The Red Lion Inn recently, the decor was very nice and the staff seemed very pleasant, unfortunately the sirloin steaks that we ordered were very tough and we were unable to eat them, we quietly told the waitress and she was very appologetic and said that a few people had complained that evening and that it was a bad batch and was going to be taken off the menu straight away. Our plates were removed and we were offered a complimentory dessert so to try and salvage the night we aceppted. After choosing we were then told the manager had said we were to pay for the steaks in order to have the dessrts, or not to have the desserts and pay for one steak, We stood our ground and said we'd pay for our drinks only, then after we were treated like criminals, and humiliated in front of everyone after being ignoered for a while the land lady came out and snapped that we they wouldn't make us pay for the meal just the drinks but were not to come back, this was the worst expirience in an eating establishment we have ever had, very upsetting. | I am extremely surprised to see that anyone would post a negative comment about this pub. We had a birthday party for my dad at the Red Lion recently. I have to say the owners and staff really went out of their way to accommodate all of us and make the day special. There were 15 of us, and everyone said their meals were superb. We were in the new dining room which is beautiful. I’ve been up to the pub on a couple of occasions before, based on recommendations and have always been really impressed. We’ll all be heading back soon for my 25th wedding anniversary. I cannot recommend the Red Lion more highly.[Report for Removal] | Janet Gould Leek Staffordshire |

| After visiting the pub in late 2008 i found everything to be exteremly nice there. However after my last visit the food was terrible, the staff where very un-profesional in there job, what i assume to be the landlady/manager was a very rude and unwelcoming person. Also i noticed that every other person in the pub paid after there meal as every pub iv been to do, i had to pay before i ate, pre-judgment that i wasnt going to pay? that alone is a insult. When i complained about the food the waitress had to stop herself from laughing? and the landlady almost shouted at us that it was our fault that we werent happy with it? I seriously DO NOT recomened you eat here.[Report for Removal] | ben Longton Staffordshire |

| Hi! I'm Pedro, from Portugal, and last Summer I've been visiting Peak District. The surroundings of this pub are just amazing. You can have long walks in the woods, read a nice book in the top of a hill from where you can look at miles around you (it had even been said that you can see the entire England hehe). That been said, you must place this pub surrounded by the most beautiful countryside landscape that you can possibly imagine. As for the pub itself, just imagine a typical well-preserved countryside pub, with it's stone walls and cosy aspect. You can easily find a place to park your car or bike near it. Inside I was greeted by the LandLady: what a nice Lady! I was quite shy (as I always feel when I'm not in a Portuguese environment) but that totally disappeared because she made me feel at home and even exchanged with me some words in Spanish (a very similar language to Portuguese). I went there with some friends and we all felt like at home! uring the meal (which was very well cooked and an incredible experience) the LandLady offered me to try an York Pudding (I think this was the name...) and I thought it was a desert... but it wasn't... even so... I HIGHLY recommend you all to try it, ok? What can I say...? I was the best meal that I had during my stay around the UK. If you want to experience the best food, in the most pleasant atmosphere... the The Red Lion Inn in Thorncliffe is your choice! [Report for Removal] | Pedro Azevedo Guimarães Portugal |

| I ate here with my brother-in-law, his partner, and my son while visiting the Peak District. This was the best place we ate at during our stay; both in terms of the food, and the atmosphere. The pub still has a fair amount of old charm and character about it, but it has been sympathetically modernised. There was a great 'vibe' about the place - many other people eating and some quiet relaxing music playing, while the staff were all very welcoming. I must mention the toilets - they were simply the best I have seen for a long time (ladies will understand how important this is!). Now as for the food - this is exactly what pub food should be. Fresh and home-made - no microwave rubbish. I had a massive Gammon steak (easily enough to feed 2!) that was cooked just right and served with loads of chips and an egg. It's a meal that I often have - but can't understand how so many places get it wrong. Nice to see it done properly! My son had chicken nuggets with chips and peas, and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. My brother-in-law and his partner both had steak and ale pies. These looked amazing, and I actually snuck a bit off their plates. So fresh, and soo good! I really can't fault anything here - the service was great, the food was amazing, and the pub itself was delightful. Nice to finally find somewhere in a touristy area that has not succumb to the tourist pitfalls. I can't recommend it highly enough. [Report for Removal] | Gemma Mcintosh Dover Kent |

| Whilst visiting friends in the Leek area whom we had met whilst on holiday in Kefalonia, we stopped in at the Red Lion,Thorncliffe. We had not booked as we just happened to be driving by on our way back from a walk in the Peak District. We received a warm welcome from the staff behind the bar and after a short wait, the landlady managed to find us a lovely table in a small bay. The Sunday roast was the best we have ever had and was extremely good value for money. The quality and presentaion was first class and we hope to visit again in the near future. Keep up the good work.[Report for Removal] | Dennis Brewer Water Orton Birmingham |

| I went to the Red Lion last Sunday for their Sunday lunch. I'm travelling from Canada and this was my first real English Sunday lunch and the Red Lion did not disappoint. The service was excellent, with friendly staff all around. The food was even better! It was an incredible 3-course meal, reasonably-priced, and more than filling. I enjoyed some fruit, followed by a delicious turkey breast, and finished off with an apple and caramel crumble. I dined with a few friends too, and all 3 of them really enjoyed their meals. I'd highly recommend the Red Lion Thorncliffe to anyone in the area looking for a friendly pub with excellent food. If I weren't returning to Canada, I'm certain I'd be going back for more.[Report for Removal] | Justen Bennett Edmonton Alberta |

| I TOO HAD HEARD GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE RED LION. I AM RECENTLY DIVORCED AND THOUGHT I WOULD BE UNCOMFORTABLE IF I WENT OUT ON MY OWN. ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO I TOOK THE 'BULL BY THE HORNS' AND MADE UP MY MIND TO TRY MY FIRST MEAL OUT BY MY MYSELF. I DID NOT BOOK JUST IN-CASE I CHANGED MY MIND. I HAD THE BEST TIME FOR YEARS, THE LANDLADY AND BAR STAFF WERE EXTREMELY FRIENDLY, CHATTING AS IF THEY HAD KNOWN ME FOR YEARS. THEY FOUND ME A LOVELY TABLE (THE PUB HAS LOTS OF DIFFERENT BAYS AND ROOMS SO YOU DON'T FEEL SELF CONSCIOUS) I REALLY ENJOYED MY TIME AT THIS PUB, THE FOOD IS EXTREMELY GOOD WITH PLENTY OF CHOICE AND THE HOME MADE DESERTS ARE 'TO DIE FOR'. IT IS A CHALLENGE TO EAT OUT ALONE SOMETIMES - BUT I HAVE MET SOME LOVELY PEOPLE AT THIS PUB, NOT ONLY THE STAFF, BUT OTHER CUSTOMERS. THE LAST TIME I WAS IN, A LARGE GROUP OF LADIES ASKED ME TO JOIN THEM, THEY TOO WERE ALL SINGLE AND MEET THERE EVERY TWO TO THREE WEEKS. THIS PUB IS A REAL TREAT - PLEASE DON'T CHANGE A THING. | I went to the Red Lion a couple of nights ago. I had heard good things about the place but had never visited before. I wasn’t disappointed. Dining alone can sometimes feel a little awkward but the staff were very accommodating and the lady behind the bar was very chatty. I was made to feel very welcome and comfortable. I had a lovely meal too – one of the best steaks I’ve had for a long time. Keep up the good work and thanks to all the staff![Report for Removal] | Peter Checkley Staffordshire |

| We visited this pub a few weeks ago with eight friends. We booked in advance so as not to cause inconvenience. It is a pleasant pub in a nice village; Good decor; Good choice of beer; food looked good: Therefore this should be a rave review. Unfortunately, whilst the staff were very pleasant the landlord was possibly the rudest i have experienced in many years of visiting many pubs. My only regret is that i did not come up with a pithy response to his general rude demanour. I can only suggest (and having read other reviews feel that i am not the only dissapointed customer)that the owners/ managers stay away from the front of house and let the clearly more proffessional junior staff run the pub. | Last night I met friends in the Red Lion. Chose this location for the views as the food is mediocre at best but cosy corners nice to sit in. Unfortunately I had to witness the rudest, unkindest display of behaviour from the landlady I have ever seen. She spent at least 5 minutes shouting at an elderly lady for taking her warfarin medication with a small bottle of water brought in to the pub for that very purpose. This customer was upset and humiliated and onlookers embarrassed .......very unpleasant lady. [Report for Removal] | Jane Buckley Macclesfield Cheshire |

| I VISITED YOUR WEB SITE FOR REVIEWS ON PUBS IN THE STAFFORDSHIRE MOORLANDS WHILST ON HOLIDAY WITH MY HUSBAND AND LARGE FAMILY OVER THE EASTER HOLIDAYS. WE CHOSE THE RED LION THORNCLIFFE.THE FOOD, ATMOSPHERE AND STAFF WERE FIRST CLASS. WE FOUND THE LANDLADY EXTREMELY PLEASANT AND SHE WENT OUT OF HER WAY TO ACCOMMODATE OUR PARTY, AS WE HAD NOT BOOKED AND THE PUB WAS BURSTING. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS OLDE WORLD COUNTRY INN TO ANY ONE VISITING, LIVING OR PASSING THROUGH THE STAFFORDSHIRE MOORLANDS. P.S. | Our spend in the Red Lion has been in the order of £1200 over the past year. The reception recieved from the landlady has never been overwhelming. On our last visit we were made to feel like an inconvienience to her. We will not be going back, due to her poor attitude. Food, pub & all other staff members are wasted whilst she is there, which is a huge loss to what is otherwise an excellent pub. [Report for Removal] | Nick Mountford Stoke on Trent Staffs |

| My wife and I have recently spent a week on holiday in the Staffordshire Moorlands and were recommended to visit the Red Lion Inn Thorncliffe, which is a privatly owned Freehouse. We were not dissapointed, every Thursday they have a fantastic Steak Night where all steaks are £8.95 these include 16oz rump or gammon, 12oz sirloin and 8oz fillet steaks all served with homemade chips, salad, onion rings, mushrooms, tomatoes and peas. This is outstanding value for money & all british beef. The service was excellent and we would recommend this traditional gem to anyone lucky enough to holiday in the area.[Report for Removal] | Jon Brenton Markham Nottingham |
