Don't bother going here. Unless you like to be served by aggressive, rude and altogether abysmal staff. Fish, chips and mushy peas - 12 pounds. Soup 6 pounds. Go instead to the Beehive at Combes - traditional pub, wonderful menu, pleasant staff, good Guinness, and lovely outside area with beautiful hanging baskets/tubs. I suspect most of the custom for the Red Lion comes from people with business accounts to claim back later. I don't think the staff give two hoots about their 'ordinary' customers[Report for Removal] Mrs Dissatisfied

We have been a few times since it reopened under the current management and to be honest we're in no hurry to rush back. It's not a cheap place to visit and we've always come away feeling short changed. Good points? The place itself has been nicely refurbished and is generally pleasant. There's a good wine list and the food is generally, though not always, of a high standard. Bad points? The food is expensive, the service is very slow and some of the tables are in grim locations. The Management is 'unresponsive' shall we say to constructive criticism. Shame really. [Report for Removal] J Chambers

We visited the Red Lion during its opening week on a Thursday evening. We were somewhat surprised that a pub on the A6 warranted a "maître d’" but there you go. We studied the menu and were seated near the window. The starters were OK, the main courses average and the dessert well.... The Sticky Toffee pudding was dry and had enjoyed a longer than healthy stay in the microwave. The cheese board, £9.95!, was abysmal. There was one (poor) type of biscuit, some rancid grapes and 3 of the four (very small) pieces of cheese were dry and cracked. The service had been, above average. A young chap asked the obligatory "was everything OK with your meal?". "Well yes, apart from the last course...". We politely explained. He said he'd go and talk to the kitchen. We could only assume that the kitchen was in Stockport as we sat there for 10 minutes before going to the bar to ask for the bill. We mentioned our cheesy query when asking for the bill and noticed the short middle aged chap (maître d’) having a stand up row next to his lectern with the young chap we'd complained to. This went on for a few minutes, so we borrowed a pen and paper, wrote our address and mobile number on it and asked them to post us a bill when they had the time. 5 minutes later we had text informing us that our behaviour was unacceptable, that we knew nothing about cheese and that we were barred! We have learned since that the "maître d’" is Steve Pilling, who used to be involved with the Chop Houses in Manchester. (We've been to Toms many times and its great). It's taken a few months for us to write this review, why you ask? Well we've since heard two further reports from friends (only 2)...the first group reported appalling service, the second were sat in a very uncomfortable position. The common factor, both parties complained to Mr Pilling, both complaints were ignored and both parties were personally insulted by Mr P. We think Mr P. is getting a bit big for his boots?
