Dating back to 1616, the Lord Cowper’s Arms in Birch Green, as the pub was once know, had stabling for 2 horses before it moved to Cole Green. There is a record of the “Admission of Henry Cowper Esq. October 15 1787 to the within mentioned messuage which is now the Public House called the Cowper Arms”. The Cowper Arms appears to have originally been at Birch Green. The pub was the subject of a transferred licence in around 1850 from an 18th century Cowper Arms at Birch Green. At the time of the transfer the pub was known as the Railway Tavern. The route of the Hertford -Welwyn Junction Railway 1858-1966 remains as a public footpath close beside the Cole Green site. The name Cowper Arms was then re-adopted and the building remained an alehouse and did not get a full licence until 1947. Guests will be able to browse a new menu which includes a wide variety of freshly prepared classic pub dishes such as Slow Cooked Shoulder of Lamb, daily fresh fish dishes and Homemade Pie of the Day. There is also a separate lunch menu offering freshly made sandwiches and salads, perfect if you’re just nipping in for a quick bite. Look out for the blackboard showing today’s specials, and the thoughtfully selected range of delicious vegetarian options. There is an extensive wine selection to compliment the menu as well as a variety of continental lagers. There is no need to book, just come in and we'll look after you. The Cowper Arms is a stylish country pub with modern twists that add to the character of the building. Features include roaring open fires, low beam ceilings and several cosy but contemporary areas to enjoy a drink or a meal. Guests will get great, friendly service in a relaxed atmosphere.
